Saturday morning hike - See bald eagles - Hiking at Lake Erie Metropark

  • February 23, 2013 · 12:00 PM

We are going to try and see the Bald Eagles out fishing on the semi-frozen lake.  Last year the park ranger recommended visiting in winter to see this.  If you're looking for something a bit different and also some easy, flat walking terrain overlooking Lake Erie, then this is a good option!

Just a short drive from the city, behold 3 miles of captivating Lake Erie shoreline and sweeping vistas that you can only get with a Great Lake and great river at 1607-acre Lake Erie Metropark. Follow the path of lake freighters moving up and down along the Detroit River against exceptional views of Sugar Island, Grosse Ile, and Celeron Island. Scan the sky of this popular bird-watching site, with more than 300 species recorded, and you just might spot a migrating broad-wing hawk or bald eagle flying above. This designated "Important Bird Area" is one of the premier hawk-watching sites in North America.

More details soon about a location to meet within the park if you don't want to carpool.

Are dogs allowed at this walk?

    February 18, 2013

    • Barbara

Can I bring my dog into the park?
Dogs are allowed in the park on a six-foot leash, and under control. Dogs are not allowed on the nature trails (marked by a sign at the entrance). Please use the "Doggit" bags provided for your convenience. Thanks!

We will be walking on the Nature Trails but also on the paved trails so the dog could go on the paved trails. The nature trails are only about 3 miles so might take 45 mins to walk that part. You could wait at the nature center building for us. Then we'll walk in the rest of the park where dogs are allowed.

Let me know if you want to carpool from the Livonia Panera Bread. I can only take 3 people and will ask for a few dollars for gas costs as prices have gone up recently
