Hike the Potawatomi Trail (NW of Chelsea)

  • Apr 12, 2014 · 11:00 AM

Looking for 12 fit people who want to try a trail that I've never walked on before.  Long distance hike to one of the most beautiful & challenging parks in S.E. Michigan. Hike (rain/shine) will be brisk paced–10 miles through forests, around lakes, campgrounds, up and down hills. But think of all the beautiful autumn colors!

The route we will be doing is shared with mountain bikes as is the case for the Island Lake. It is quiet and peaceful and you will need to put forth some energy in the ups and downs. Now is the right time to do this trail.

Wear sturdy boots; bring lunch and lots of water! We will stop halfway for lunch.

Meet for carpooling:  if you want to carpool, please contact walkers separately via meetup email.

Meet at park: 11am - If you want to meet us there, meet at the trailhead near Silver Lake (see directions below).

Difficulty/Distance: 6-9 miles, difficult

Must haves: lots of water, packed lunch, sturdy shoes/boots, wear layers

My cell:[masked]

Driving to the park:  You will also pass by another park on the way to Potatowami Trail that is called Hudson Mills Metropark on the south side of North Territorial. Keep driving. You want the turn-off for Dexter Town Hall Road is about 2 miles further west than Hudson Mills. There is also another road before Hudson Mills with a similar name (Dexter-Pinckney Road) which we do not want.

Pinckney allow dogs by the way but they may tire on a 10 mile walk. If you are really keen to bring your dog though, you can return though and walk part of the trail system and it is still fun.

I also have a prior engagement on Saturday, so it's unlikely that I'll make this hike, unfortunately. I'll update my RSVP accordingly by Saturday morning. Hope to make another longer hike in the future (more events at Pinckney Recreation Area and Island Lake Recreation Area would be great). :)

Please keep in mind that this is a difficult walk with a lot of hills in case you have not done it before. Also you need to bring water and something to eat.

We are excited about doing this hike again, it was a lot of fun!

Many thanks for organizing this, Barb. My strong preference would be to hike facing the bikers (starting from the trail head for hikers). I've only hiked this trail once (with another group), but there were *lots* of bikers at that time. I wouldn't want them riding up behind us (which would be dangerous both for the bikers and for us). Thanks for considering. :)

Yes we will be doing that.
