Startup Stories - The Evolution of Fondu

Hi Everybody

Our next meetup is scheduled for Wednesday, February 29th at 6:45pm at the AOL Ventures space at 670 Broadway (between Bond and Great Jones) on the 4th floor.

So you've identified a compelling concept for a location based app ... how do you evolve that into a business? This month, we'll be discussing the evolution of a location based startup with our very own Gauri Manglik, the co-founder and CEO of Fondu. Fondu is an interesting story, one of NYC's hottest new startups that evolved out of a company called SpotOn. SpotOn launched at TechCrunch Disrupt in May 2010 as a personalized recommendation engine for places, but began to gain traction more for the social aspect of sharing than from the recommendation engine itself. Thus, Fondu was born as a social network for sharing bite size reviews of places to eat and drink. We'll talk with Gauri about her experiences in launching a location based app, about how the Fondu team decided to pivot based on their users' feedback, and about the future of places-based sharing.

In addition, we have three awesome demos this month from:

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 29th!

I was wondering this myself. It seems that they don't want us to know until Wednesday. We can tell what their older version did. And MAYBE we can make some inferences. But I know the "build suspense & mystery" strategy has worked on me, at least a little! (I have some reminders to myself to check back.)

I think the Fondu presentation was great. Gauri was a lovely presenter, who was very knowledgeable and answered the questions with intelligence and humor.

Lovely demos focused on the early possibilities of LB Services, Applications, Advertising & Events. Gauri's discussion about the evolution of Fondu and the lessons learned were truly amazing.

Hey Everyone, I hope you have an awesome time at the meetup tonight. I wish I could be there. My team and I are launching a new version of our location-based mobile app, Screach, on March 7th. Would be great to hear your feedback.

You can go to to create an avatar to be used in the app when it launches on March 7th. Thanks.
