Cosumnes River Preserve to Delta Meadows

  • March 22, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • Cosumnes River Preserve

We will meet at the Cosumnes River Preserve and paddle this one way trip throught the seldom used north Delta to Delta Meadows State Park where we will see some of the most beautiful areas of the North Delta where we will see many of the hundreds of bird species andwildlife. If we are lucky we will have an Orinthologist with us!

We will start shuttling vehicles to our final destination; Wimpies Marina, at 9:00AM and shoot for a 10:00AM on water time. We will use the high tide to our favor to get through the back door and ride the ebb tide 7.5 miles to Wimpys Marina. The total trip is 7.5 miles with one short portage. Be sure you bring lots of water, wheels (if you have them), snacks, rain gear( if there's the treat of light rain) and a smile! This will be a fun and special kayak! It was a long paddle for my limited experience and I enjoyed the challenge. The scenery was better than I expected. It was a first class day!

Roy. I am so sorry. I extended my help you to load your boat after you returned with your car after I dropped you at consumnes Park Reserve.

And in my own thoughts, forgot about it in next few minutes. Only realized again when I saw you back in restaurant

What a fantastic: Day, Weather, Paddle, Exploration, Food, ... but most of all a fantastic group to be with. Everyone was supportive, had a group spirit (remember trying to "raft up" for the picture)? I want all of us to plan for another trip in the near future, to go from Wimpy's to the Meadow and back to Wimpy's.... that was one of the best beers ever! I want to just go to the Meadows and explore, enjoy the flora and fauna .... and drift back to Wimpy's on the tide.

    1 · March 23, 2014

  • Cherie

Actually, the paddle was to Wimpy's and not Delta Meadows.....great paddle, beautiful weather, and fun paddlers to paddle with! The portage was over a large rock and took some time. Large group, 35 paddlers!

    March 23, 2014

  • Dale B.

Good paddle, great exercise, and a large group. Sorry we did not stop at the Delta Meadows Park.

Looks like you all had a great journey! I hung out for awhile on the bank in Delta Meadows State Park along Snodgrass Slough, hoping to shoot a pic from land, but I must've estimated the timing wrong.

      March 23, 2014

    • Cherie

Yeah, we got a later-than-planned start and the back door portage took a while to get through....I think we got to Wimpy's at about 2pm?

A very fun day with a good group of paddlers.

What a great day on the river. I look forward to more events and meeting others that enjoy being on the water in a yak!

Great paddle and a fun group to be around on a Saturday! The weather was perfect and we saw a variety of birds.

What a great kayak trip. Thanks everyone for making this a very special trip. Everything about is was fun - the trip - the people and the food at the end. Let's do another one real soon!!

Dear Leader, I own an old fat slow solo kayak and haven't been doing my cardio lately. Would you allow me to slip into the paddling fleet on your last mile of the journey,, at the intersection of Locke Slough and Snodgrass Slough? If not, fhat's okay, i'll try to catch up with all of you at Wimpy's.

    March 21, 2014

    • Karen C.

We should be 2-2.5 hours easy paddling with the tide. You CAN do it!

      March 21, 2014

  • Dale B.

I have a PVC cart and use thin/hard lawn mower wheels. Will that be sufficient for any "rolling" on land this trip?

    March 19, 2014

    • Mike

Dale, your cart should be fine. You will need to roll your kayak about 200 yards on a smooth cement sidewalk.

You have an eddyline, just carry it ;)

Just curious, when we leave the Consumes Preserve, do we paddle the Consumes river to the Moke to Wimpy's, or, do we leave the Preserve and paddle over to and down Snodgrass Slough? So excited!

    March 19, 2014

    • Cherie

If you go back and read the original paddle details it confirms the end point.

      March 20, 2014

    • Dale B.

Yep, I got the endpoint, it's all the little 'tweenpoints I was wondering about. Does Wimpy's have salads? :)

Anyone know if we need to make a reservation at Wimpy's? ?

    March 19, 2014

  • Barbara M.

I am mad I'm going to miss it. I'm rehabbing from a broken arm :(

    February 25, 2014

Barbara I hope you feel better soon! Will miss seeing you there!

  • Karen C.

So we meet a Wimpy's right?

    March 19, 2014

    • Mike

Karen, we will meet at the Cosumnes River Preserve and shuttle some vehicle to Wimpy's where the trip will end.

      OK, Thanks

At the last paddle, people were asking what is appropriate to wear OTW this time of year. Remember...never cotton! Always go with moisture-wicking clothing and layers made of wools or synthetics. Neoprene booties are a good idea, hats, sunscreen, bug spray...just a few things. Who else has suggestions for those who are new to the group?

    March 17, 2014

    • martha e.

merino, huh? what about the cheap fleece pullover and socks i already own - will those still work?

      March 19, 2014

    • Cherie

Those should work as well...just remember base layers that wick and warm layers used to insulate. But no cotton, haha. My husband had to learn the hard way...

Made this trip a while back with the LPC. It was a lot of fun. Looking forward to paddling this again.

    See you all there!

Karen and I are not feeling well and will not participate

That's very nice of you .

    March 6, 2014

  • martha e.

When all of you arrive in Delta Meadows Sate Park, you are welcome to portage your kayaks 300 walking steps to my backyard in Locke at "Gambling House" at the south end of Main Street, and store them there until you're able to pick them up later or a day or two later. I can also assist with transporting some folks to and from Wimpy's.

Looks great! Thanks so much for putting this together!
