What is the meaning of "commitment"?

When a team "commits" to an iteration/sprint, what do they mean? Who are they committing to? What does the commitment mean?

We encourage members to take photographs during our sessions. If you are not happy for images of you to be posted on the internet/used to publicise the group, please do not attend this event.

Please note: you can only book tickets to this session 14 days beforehand

The event will be held in the upstairs room at The Plumbers Arms. The sessions are informal and we are happy for you to eat the pub grub / drink during the meetup (the pies are pretty nice).

The pub's site gives directions: http://www.taylor-walker.co.uk/pub/plumbers-arms-belgravia/c0685/

Interesting discussion, covering lots of angles and differing view points.

Thanks for organising us, the format worked well.

I was aware that you never got to have your official turn. However you seemed to be getting involved, so I let it flow. I certainly learnt some new view points and I hope everyone else did as well.

Bit of a poor turn-out, including from the organizer! Fortunately Andrew picked up the reigns and led the discussion with a sort-of round robin of discussion, each discussing their points of view and occasionally going off-topic but I think still relevant. Something mentioned a bit was the change in the latest scrum guidelines changing "commitment" to "forecasting". We touched on things like the morale effect on development teams, whether punishments should be used, having buffers outside the sprint for setting business expectations, visibility of the process to the business, using sprint goals to ensure certain things are delivered within a sprint, and ketchup bottles! Thanks all!

Apologies again for the no show. And many thanks to Andrew for picking up. For the benefit of anyone reading in future, the Organiser was me in this instance, not David.

Good session with a small group, which was quite nice as everyone could have their say. Great meeting new faces.

For those that weren't there - we went round in a circle and each shared our definitions of commitment with a free-flowing (mostly on-topic) discussion around each one.

Tut tut, Simon. I go away for one week to sun myself and drink too much ... I mean on a Scrum coaching retreat ... and this is what happens!

Running late - stuck in client meeting gone wrong - please start without me if needs be. I was going to suggest another gold fish bowl discussion for this. Remember earlier comment about scrum guide change.

Will be in Bucharest for this one, but thought I'd mention that last year's revision of the Scrum guide removes the word 'commitment' and replaces it with the word 'forecast'...

I know ;-) Which is hopefully what will make it interesting. Enjoy Bucharest.
