User stories: is the "As a <who>, I want <what> so that <why>" format harmful?

David Evans, of Crisp, wrote an interesting blog post in September 2015 ('“As a, I want, So that” Considered Harmful'). Do you agree? Is this format, which has become many companies' default format become a monster?

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS BLOG POST BEFORE YOU ATTEND THIS MEETUP OTHERWISE YOU WON'T GET AS MUCH FROM THE SESSION.

We encourage members to take photographs during our sessions. If you are not happy for images of you to be posted on the internet/used to publicise the group, please do not attend this event.

The event will be held in the upstairs room at The Plumbers Arms. The sessions are informal and we are happy for you to eat the pub grub / drink during the meetup (the pies are pretty nice).

The pub's site gives directions: http://www.taylor-walker.co.uk/pub/plumbers-arms-belgravia/c0685/

So, did the group like the format of discussing an idea in a blog post? Looks like it sparked a good debate. Had everyone read the blog post ahead of time?

Actually, I would add that I think it needed some BA's/PO's input to balance the discussion a little. As there were a lot of SM's and devs it was hard to appreciate the business POV of stories

Obviously this is a sample of one. But there did seem to be less "point scoring" and taking your own side this time. I did very little facilitation of the discussion as it was flowing very nicely on its own.

Sorry could very much like to attend, unfortunately can't make it today, wondering if there will be presentation or video for sharing. Many thanks.

There wasn't a presentation. Ladg is a discussion group where we encourage sharing of thought and open learning. Last night's format was an informal debate about the topic of whether the 'standard' format of user stories could be considered harmful.

That's a real shame. Looks like we might have to start clamping down in the no shows?

Incredible. Wait list was there, attending list was rammed and barely 50% of the supposed attendees actually turned up. You should be ashamed of yourselves and I'm not kidding. Please have some consideration for the wait listers those who don't intend to come or can't make it.

Sorry, can no longer make it tonight (I'd done the reading and everything). I've just changed my RSVP so someone else can go.

We have a massive Wait List for tomorrow, so please, please update your RSVP if you can't make it.

And here's another link to the blog post if you've yet to get around to reading it - http://blog.crisp.se/2014/09/25/david-evans/as-a-i-want-so-that-considered-harmful

    Thanks :-)

I just free'd up a space. I have something else on that evening and realise the clash until today.

Hi All. Just a reminder for Tuesday - please make sure you've read the blog post (http://blog.crisp.se/2014/09/25/david-evans/as-a-i-want-so-that-considered-harmful) to make sure you can contribute and get the most out of the session.

    Thanks :-)

Hi David. This meetup looks interesting and I've been meaning to come along to a meeting for a while. But it seems fully booked every week! If I rsvp onto the waiting list do i get an email if i should come, or what do i do? if you room can take more than 30 people then should i just turn up??
    :-)

Hey Vijay. It is difficult to book at times. You can start booking for the next event immediately after the one that takes place (i.e. Tues eve), so get in early is the best advice. Being on the waitlist, you will get emailed if a place becomes available, but it can be very late notice sometimes, but with 42 waiting... hmm! I don't advise just turning up, it's a small venue and I'm not sure that 30 actually fit in very easily!

As ever, those who are attending, please update your RSVP if you can't make it.. there are plenty who can take your place.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
