Free Prom 38 – Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

Arrive in good time, queue up on the day and join Tony up in the GALLERY for this superb Prom which celebrates the bicentenary of the Royal Philharmonic Society with a new work by Mark-Anthony Turnage and a performance of the society’s most famous commission for choir and orchestra, Beethoven’s boundary-breaking ‘Choral’ Symphony.

Vaughan Williams Toward the Unknown Region (11 mins)

Mark-Anthony Turnage Frieze (15 mins)

Beethoven Symphony No. 9 in D minor, 'Choral' (70 mins)

Full details of Free Prom

*** Please note that entry is not guaranteed so arrive in good time.
The official meeting place is up in the Gallery inside the Royal Albert Hall. Please find me quickly to help reserve a spot. I will have a small meetup badge and sign.

To get into the Gallery you must first join the 'GALLERY DAY TICKET' queue outside the Royal Albert Hall. The Gallery Day ticket queue stretches often with a gap from door 10 westwards down Bremner Rd (avoid season ticket and arena queues!). On arrival, join the back of the queue. The stewards may hand out a 'position ticket' to restrict queue jumping and allow you to briefly leave the queue and regain your position if you get back in time. The queue starts moving 50 mins before the start time.

I'd guess your chance of a ticket would be pretty certain if queuing by 5pm dropping to a risky 10% chance if queuing by 7:25pm.

COST: Free entry ticket (limit one each)

BOOKING: No booking. There are 500 day tickets available on the day.

There's no seating, we stand, sit or lie on the 'Gallery' floor (some bring a mat/towel).
Limited view, most people are content to just stand up occasionally to see what's going on.
Bring food and drink for queuing and if discrete you can usually take inside (no glass). It's a posh venue so refreshments are expensive.
When the music is playing you need to be absolutely quiet.
Large bags to be left in cloakroom (£1 per item).
There is no dress code.
It will be rather warm inside.
The Prom starts 7:30pm, has an interval and should finish by 10pm.
Queue jumping is discouraged.

** No Piccadilly Line **

I've been there but it's too hard to find Tony inside the hall - I don't know what looks like..
Well I had a nice time by myself. I will join this meet up if I have a chance.

Sorry but I'm going to pull out of this one as I'm so tired after a long days walking yesterday. Will listen on radio 3. Enjoy!

Tony I will not get there before 5.30 and still think that's plenty of time to get in even though I expect it to be a popular prom.

When I go to the proms with a group of friends we take a picnic and meet on the steps in front of Albert memorial in Hyde Park on the other side of the road when we've got a position ticket by the steward. Perhaps this would be good place to meet for the picnic provided the weather is good?

Hi Jennifer, I invite other pre prom picnic people (PPPP) to indicate if they will join you. (I intend going to the pre prom talk instead. Anyone wishing to do same should ask steward handing out position ticket for details.)

As for 'by 5pm arrival time', it's just my best guess and everyone is free to decide for themselves.
