'The Three Laws of Portraiture' lecture and exhibition, Mall Galleries

Three laws of portraiture, lecture

Richard Wendorf, former Harvard Professor and Director of the American Museum, will talk on his premise that there are three laws of portraiture drawing in the works on show at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ annual exhibition.

He will be taking questions afterwards.

This is a free event but please book a place in advance by emailing [masked] with your request

Britain's largest exhibition of recent portraits in diverse styles and with a fascinating array of celebrities and lesser-known sitters. The show will also feature shortlisted works from SELF, the major new art competition which pushes the boundaries of self-portraiture.

The new painting and drawing prize SELF,  will be shown as a special section of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual exhibition.

SELF aims to explore self-representation in painting and drawing. Free from the constraints of commissioned portraiture, the self-portrait does not seek to flatter the sitter, pay a model, play slave to time and is free to explore character and medium; the artist is at liberty to push the boundaries and experiment.

The winning artist will be presented with a cheque for £20,000.

Plus, a specialist will be on hand throughout the exhibition to answer any questions about commissioning portraits

Admission: £3, £2.50 Concession, Free to FBA Friends, National Art Pass holders and under 18s

The Mall Galleries is just off Trafalgar Square - go under Admiralty Arch and you will find it on the right hand side of the Mall. Nearest tube Charring Cross.

After the events stay on for drinks in the Opera Room of Chandos, the pub opposite the National Portrait Gallery in St Martins Lane.

I was disappointed not be able to attend the Three Laws of Portraiture lecture in the end, and was wondering if anyone who attended could share what they learned about the SELF portrait competition? I tried to Google it and couldn't find it. Hope to hear from you!
