UPDATE 24/9/13: Maryam Namazie has replied to my query about whether this meetup was going ahead to say that the Islamist has pulled out of the debate. Boo-hiss! I will email everyone who has RSVP'd to make sure you all know this meeting is therefore cancelled. However Maryam Namazie will be speaking at a debate on the niqab : human right, security concern or symbol of oppression? on Tuesday 15 October 2013. Chetan Bhatt, Director of the LSE Centre for the Study of Human Rights, will chair the debate. It starts at 6.30pm in CLM 4.02 Clement House at 99 Aldwych, WC2B 4JF. Registration at door.

This is a NON-LAAG event ( not oranised by this group, but by a third party - here it's LSE)

    Hey guys,

Not sure if this is relevant but I'll add it here anyway (hope nobody minds). I'm off to Afghanistan on the 18th for some charity work and photography/doc film making at an orphanage. I'll be posting my insights/pics on this benighted land on my blog at:

    www.duluxdreams.wordpress.com

Please do visit if interested...and erm, please pray for me too! Pray that the bearded one's leave me alone.

    Adios,
    Wasim.

You're asking atheists to pray for you?! Good luck with that! lol

If you're not convinced of the efficacy of prayer you could always sacrifice a goat...

Is the message, Sharia is not to be debated? (simply enforced)

    • Adrian

It's against sharia law isn't it!?

To debate involves, logical sequential coherent discussion, as you have both implied, this is not the Sharia way. Do we know why they have pulled out?

I shall certainly be going to the one on the 15th!

Brilliant keyboard skills from Brian as usual.

Thanks Cloe for that complement, it means a lot to me.

I suspect that debating the introduction of Sharia law has been deemed to be off-strategy, i.e. the movement behind this has a softly-softly strategy and someone has dictated that debate risks the wrong PR. That in itself is worrying

You could be right Duncan, though Muslims aren't known for softly softly anything ;-)

Uuumm. Why am I not surprised. There could be more to this than meets the eye.

Adam Deen,, of the Deen 'Institute' is somewhat boring imv, but Maryam should liven him up a bit. From what I can deduce, he favours a more 'modern' Islam, which angers many Mulsims,, who think the opposite, and want to keep it/take it back to the 7th century.

I can't actually find any reference to this on CEMB's website anymore, so looks like they've cancelled it. Will check with maryam. Just have a look at this page though:

Damn, pressed 'enter' by mistake. It's Adam deen's FB, https://www.facebook.c... and the comments are hilarious e.g.: "Be very careful. They have disgusting sneaky tactics and spread lies about hamza and twist his words. Not to mention they're a bunch of absolute nutcases"
