REGULAR last-sun-of-month SOCIAL: Annual PIC-a-NIC (and/or Ealing Jazz Festival)

  • Jul 28, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • Walpole Park, Ealing, London W5

Since we've having several picnics in Hyde park this year (in conjunction with our Speakers' Corner activism events), we thought we'd offer a different location for our Annual Social picnic. No 'business' alongside this one - purely playtime!, ...so bring along your games, drinking songs, guitars, dogs, sprogs, granddads and whatever else you fancy ...! Sing songs at LAAG summer socials are practically inevitable! (Anita Timans has even promised to bring song sheets for Latvian drinking songs!!...uh-oh, I can see an excuse for Cloe to get shot-tastic!!)

Last year we had our annual picnic social in Hyde Park (the group was much smaller as LAAG had just started!: here's a little clip :-))

ABOUT THIS EVENT:

PICNIC and/or JAZZ FESTIVAL, WALPOLE PARK, EALING

We will site ourselves near the entrance to WALPOLE PARK from LAMMAS PARK GARDENS. We'll be on the right hand side as you enter the park, near the big round flowerbeds (or where we can find nearest trees for shade, if it's a scorcher). Look for the Atheist Banner! (We'll also email out a contact number the night before)

(There are toilets in the park, plus a cafe for light snacks, ice cream, coffee etc., and Ealing shops are close by at Ealing Broadway = M&S, Pret, McDonalds etc)

There will be a choice to either stay at the picnic, or come and go from the JAZZ festival as you please (We've confirmed with Ealing council that readmission is allowed) The Jazz festival is in the Big Top Tent in the park, 1 min away but behind a barrier - £5 for a day pass.

Depending on the weather we may go to a local pub around 7pm (though for those who are buying Jazz festival tickets, the JAZZ tent is open till 10:30pm)

Event Price: FREE (or £5 on the door paid to the Jazz festival, if you want to do that as well as the LAAG picnic)

JAZZ FESTIVAL DETAILS:

Held under the big top tent in gorgeous Walpole Park, the Ealing Jazz festival features "big band favourites, funky Latin flavours, Jazz and fusion funk, Bebop, Hard bop (whatever the custarding popeshit that is! - thanks Rich for licensing us that wonderful expression!), contemporary jazz and more"

There are plenty of vendors for street food inside the jazz festival area, but of course you're welcome to bring your own (alcohol in non glass bottles within the JAZZ festival area). Lots of toilets. a kids areas, and other facilities too.

The above pic is only an image but here's a clip of previous the previous festival: http://www.ealing.gov.uk/homepage/60/ealing_summer_festivals

  • gates for JAZZ festival open at 1.30pm, show runs from[masked]pm.
  • Location: Walpole Park, Mattock Lane, Ealing W5 5QE
  • Entry: £5 per person, per day on 26-28 July. (£8 weekend ticket per person for 27 and 28 July). Children aged 12 and under are free. Pay at the gates on the day.
  • Full details and line-up here (Please see restrictions on what you can take in etc., at the bottom of the page)

As with all our events, our friends from CLHG and indeed from any other secular organisation/meetup groups are always welcome.

TRANSPORT

TFL.gov.uk to check for best route/possible disruptions. Ealing Broadway station is 10 mins fast train from Paddington, and served by District and Central lines. South Ealing Station is Piccadilly line. Park is equi-distant between the two, though our Picnic we will be situated closer to the South Ealing Tube end.

The weather held up and it was great company so thanks to all who came along :-)

The jazz 'after-party' was very good - they had a big band closing and that was excellent. There was even and after-party-after-party for the intrepid few!

with regard to singing what I would say is that, depending on the amount of alcohol, singing might turn out to be not only likely but probably unavoidable

    1 · July 27, 2013

  • Georgi L.

Weather looking on our side for the afternoon, so get those drinking songs ready everyone! We seen to have the UN represented amongst us ...maybe we could sing some rude lyrics about religion in gallic, russian or egyptian and no one will even know ;-)

  • Anita

I found Lammas Park, but I did not find any atheist group. Finally I ate my picnic alone.

Oh I got confused with the cancelled events that were still appearing. Nope I didn't smoke tea.

      July 20, 2013

    • Georgi L.

Look forward to meeting you, hopefully the rain will hold off but there are plenty of nice pubs nearby in any case so I'm sure we can have a good time regardless!

Just a quick one for you guys. I know some people have been looking for more social outings and i think this may be right up your street.
I am putting on a play at the white bear in Kennington from the 6-10th August at 20:30 and also 1600 on the Saturday 10th afternoon. Is basically a comedy taking the piss out of religion and questioning it.
The play is called Immaculate by Oliver Lansley Is about a women (dominatrix) who is told by ' The Angel Gabriel' she is about to give birth to the second 'jesus', but then 'Satan' turns up and says it is his...But then non religious figures also claim parentage such as her Ex and a one night stand. A paternity whodunnit.
Anyway think some of you would really find it funny and theatre always a nice evening out.

Anyway for you guys as am part of the group can do discounted tickets of £8 if you say Atheist on the door. You can also buy them online at www.whitebeartheatre.co.uk and use same method and just say athiest when present ticket.

I like The White Bear. It's near my Uni. Sounds interesting, I will consider it!

I have messaged the guys here to see if can sort out for a group of us

    Maybe...

I take it you don't mean the 'holy' kind of spirit (Ok to bring anything for the picnic as we'll be situated outside the Jazz tent in the main park. The 'elf & safety restrictions of non glass bottles blah blah only apply to the Jazz festival sectioned off area)

      July 12, 2013

    • Cloe

May have about four more students/sprogs turning up.

Hi Kieron and Ginny, I've put the jazz picnic in my diary for the 28th, so you all there.

      2 · July 13, 2013

  • Georgi L.

Yay!, Anita and Joanne are coming too ...cue those Latvian and Kiwi drinking songs, uh-huh those poor people around us aren't going to know what's hit them! Adam, Serge, Christy - do you want to add some Hungarian/ Russian/Greek songs?! It's like the UN! Plus we have two cricket bats and balls (tennis balls for 'elf n safety!), anyone got wickets? ...we could have a fun cricket match if it's not too 'ot? ...probably best before the drinking songs and shots though ;-)

    1 · July 13, 2013

    • Adrian

Shame there's no pond or we could be like proper professional cricketers and get pissed up and take out pedaloes!

      July 13, 2013

  • Kieron

Jeez Marcus, that was quick, you didn't hang around eh haha. See you later on this morning.

    July 13, 2013

  • Roger

Sorry folks, will be performing in Rottingdean on that day.

    May 18, 2013

    • Georgi L.

Aw, what a shame Roger, we'll miss you! But hope you'll have fun at Rottingdean, and the other concerts. (btw if anyone wants to go along to one of Roger's concerts, the first is on Jul27th and is listed here: http://www.meetup.com... ....they take place in various London parks throughout the summer - dates listed - saxophone choir doing different styles of music, and are free!)

      July 12, 2013

  • Georgi L.

Readmission is allowed to Jazz Festival, now confirmed.
