ACTIVISM EVENT - Speakers Corner, weekly

THIS IS A LAAG OWN EVENT, but organisers will likely not be present, hence it is being hosted informally by 'Brave Sir Robin' LAAGer, Brian! (Brain will not necessarily be able to be at EVERY weekly SC event himself either, but you can still arrange to meetup with other LAAGers who have RSVP'd)

Please note, since LAAG organisers may not be present,  if you wish to meet up with other members who have RSVP'd 'yes', you can arrange that yourselves in the 'comments' boxes below, or by emailing each other from 'members' in the top menu )

ABOUT THESE EVENTS

  • LAAG is having a series of activism events at SC throughout the summer. The next 'official' one is August 25th, whene we will have our own stand, banners etc. In the meantime, many LAAGers do go every week so these weekly listings are put here so that you can all arrange to meetup, if you wish to do so.

  • So many bystanders at our previous events have asked us to "please come back" so these outing to SC are great for making a peaceful, good-natured stand for reason/atheism.These events have been good fun and the public have been surprised to see reason/atheism/humanism/secularism represented. Previous activism events have been getting high fives from people passing by - leaving the devisiveness & fear to the religious, we'll spread joy and reason instead!

PURPOSE:

Apart from enjoying the cameraderie with fellow atheists, the purpose of our activism is to:

- Show the religious they can't say whatever dangerous, devisive and bigoted stuff they like, unchallenged. E.g. Should they be able to say "kill the infidels" (i.e all non muslims ) - and get away with it,  in this country (or indeed anywhere?) Once something has to be justified, obviously you can't be so gung-ho and it makes it just a little more difficult to recruit vulnerable people so easily perhaps?

- Show a voice for the the silent/apathetic majority (non religious people!); which will inevitably, in time, reach media and government.  Time and again we hear from politicians at rallies etc that secularists/atheists just don't show up or write-in. So let's start doing that ...or we'll have to stop complaining that our views are not reflected in society ;-)

- Showing latent atheists and secularists that actually, there are many many more of us than they realise...gives them confidence that they too can 'come out'! One never knows who hears something and it makes a difference. The ripple effect - you can't see it but it can work, er, miracles!

WE SUGGEST YOU WEAR REF T-SHIRTS (Red, for atheism), to show others our presence easily.

You can also print out leaflets (or personalise your own plain t-shirts  with permanent markers) - Stephen Yarde has suggested this site....below (http://www.richarddawkins.net/a...

It has short, unique phrases using the irony "MAKE SENSE"  e.g. "All evil in the world is because of a talking snake. Makes sense"

LEAFLETS (or notes to help with dealing with religious people):

You can find good quotes to use when speaking yourself, or for your own reference at : evilbible.com

Or see here for short/memorable ripostes!

After this they said that secularism is bad and that it would be better if common law had more stringent moral code. He asked for example if I had a daughter aged 18 would I allow her to become a porn actress even if she chosen to become one. He expected me to say no but I said I would give my opinion which would be unfavourable however it is her choice. He was shocked. He went on to say he should have the right to veto her choice no matter her age as he would always be her "guardian" and the law should back him up. So then I got stuck into him and asked if he had a daughter aged 9 who wanted to marry a 40 yr old man would he let her ? His answer shocked me. He said if he deemed she was "mature psychologically" and the husband to be was a good man then then he would agree.

One thing is clear, both groups are stuck in the age of various metals !

Thanks very much for posting your 'diary' for the day. It's really interesting to know the sort of interactions people have in order to help everyone to become better at speaking to these people. I like your style: logic will screw them up every time!

Yes seconded, well done Sanjay. It's quite illuminating to see actual discussions written down (not to mention the entertainment factor!) This is why we do SC type activism. You can only focus your arguments by trying them out in real life. If you don't want to risk it (initially at least) on friends and family then SC provides a good training ground, as do forums. Different forums are good in different ways - external ones are good for 'debating' with religionists, newspaper comments boxes are good for getting alternative POV's heard, and our own in LAAG is one of the best I've come across for getting useful and constructive input from other atheists. Hope to meet you soon Sanjay.

With the Muslims I had to change tack as I don't know the koran well so I asked
    1. Is god perfect ?
    2. Is the world perfect ?
    3. How can something perfect make something imperfect and still be called perfect ?

They decided between themselves that god deliberately made the world imperfect, with perfect precision !

To really upset christians just get them to read 1 Timothy 4:10 which clearly states we all are saved, especially those who believe. Get them to read that then shake their hand as you walk off and say "See you in heaven neighbour" ! They hate that !

I had a great time there yesterday and stayed until late. I git a christian speaker to admit god does not know the future until it becomes a reality which is a tad confusing but he avoided at all costs saying god knows the future because that means he created most of us knowing we woud reject him and go to hell. So why create those who go to hell ? I also cornered him on the stoning to death for picking up sticks story in numbers as it clearly says the hebrews came upon a stranger who would not know their laws yet they stone him anyway. He said whatever god says is moral. Also apparently there is evil in the world because of free will, as god allowed evil in order that we should have free will. I then asked him to describe heaven which he said was free of evil to which I asked "Is there free will in heaven ?". I don't think he ever heard that point before.

A very unpleasant day, and once again ruined by a minority of Muslims who just cannot control their tempers. A trio of drunken halfwits arrived, two of them bullied, threatened, swore, and abused pretty much any non muslim who tried to talk to them. One assaulted a christian speaker, and would have done worse had he not been semi-restrained by his 'brothers'. The anger and hate engraved on their faces was there for all to see. Eventually the police arrived, and then we saw how brave they were, they ran like scalded cats. One was captured and eventually bundled into the back of a police van, but not before he had removed his belt and threatened them with it, repeating his earlier behaviour. This is the second consecutive week where there has been physical violence here, following two separate incidents last week where two fights broke out, this time on both occasions it was Muslims fighting each other. One this basis, we will need to review our strategy for our next visit.

Thanks for the update Kieron. Perhaps the heat isn't helping tempers, but yes, we need to rethink it if there is violence there as a regular occurence. No point in us trying to spread Joy and Reason if they will just ruin it like this. But you said they were swearing etc at anyone who tried to talk to them, whereas we won't be trying to do that, and rather just engaging quietly at our own Stand with those who want to speak with us. But if these guys come over and refuse to let us, then what can we do, that's the issue isn't it. (For some reason I didn't get the pic you sent me last night, perhaps you can upload it here if you get a mo). Lets see if it calms down again in the next few weeks and then review our August 25th planned group meetup there.

At least we have a few weeks to regroup but that's quite disappointing (though not that surprising). The fascists always ruin all the fun.

Here's something that might be helpful: if you are putting forward a scientific argument then the religious person will almost certainly counter with a philosophical one or a semantic one. At which point say "I put forward a scientific point and what you said is philosophical/semantic. Respond with a scientific point or this conversation is over" I did that, then walked away when they carried on with their philosophical response, which felt very good!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
