LAAG Got The Blues - Extra Social Event

  • Jul 21, 2013 · 1:30 PM
  • Walpole Park, Ealing, London W5

I'm going to the blues festival in Ealing this Sunday - the same venue as we are having the picnic for the jazz festival the following Sunday. Mainly I'm going because two of the bands on the main stage are friends of mine - oh and by the way fantastic musicians - plus the headline is Doctor Feelgood and it's near where I live. Anyway looks like some of you may be interested to join in, and that's great if you do. This is not a picnic but just a social drinking and laughing and listening to music thing really.

The two bands I know are at 3pm John O'Leary. He was in Alexis Korner's band in the 60s and is really British blues royalty (a better qualification for royalty than birth right!) John and I have gigged together in the past too. Here's a youtube clip of John at last year's Ealing Blues Festival

At 5pm it's my friends Never The Bride. Nikki Lamborne the vocalist has a fantastic quote from the Who's Roger Daltrey: "Nikki Lamborn has the best female rock voice since Janis Joplin and I know what I’m talking about, I knew Janis.” She is fantastic and well worth the all-day ticket price of £5 just to hear her voice! Here's a clip

I don't recognise most of the other bands but if this is the standard then expect greatness. The headline is Doctor Feelgood. Many will remember them but in case you have the luxury of being young enough not to, here's a clip of my favourite song of theirs - She Does It Right

Obviously LAAG aren't charging for this event. Tickets are available only on the gate on the day and they're £5 each and they do allow you to come and go at your leisure. It all finishes up at 10:45 so ample time to get the tube home - or find another bar and continue getting trashed ;-) Although I seriously doubt we'll need an after party after over 9 hours of drinking, I mean listening.

There are food outlets and plenty of bars in the live arena so you can feed and water yourself with little effort. The toilets are decent enough too.

Weather: it's going to be scorchio so do bring your sun cream!

Headline 'Dr Feelgood'.. how come,,!!?? Lee Brilleaux is long dead and Wilco Johnson is ill with terminal cancer.!! The other two were pretty average,, so not the same band, and err... hardly an apt name for a band who had so much trauma eh.? But a great live band, this was my fav, obviously not written by them, but at their gigs it was always last, to ensure they got an encore. Not the best clip, so just imagine all the audience joining in with the chorus, and Wilko doing his impression of being electrocuted lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gN9JoNRiWo0

I'm mainly going for the bands I know - so this is just extra for me - I didn't see them live but I've seen lots of clips obviously. For £5 I'm already ahead of the game if I only like a handful of the rest.
