NON LAAG EVENT - Ealing Skeptics ITP "How America Saved The English Language"

This is an external (non LAAG) event but is organised by our friends William and co from, 'Skeptics in the Pub', Ealing', and we recommend them.

Not a LAAG own event but similar structure and around a third to half the audience seem to be LAAGers anyway!. 1 or more LAAG organisers are usually present, though not always.

This month:

'How America saved the English language'

Lynne Murphy

Price £3-5

What's the talk about?

Lynne Murphy (Reader in Linguistics at Sussex University) takes you on a grammatical tour of transatlantic prejudices and challenges what you think you know about Americanisms--and their effect on the Mother Tongue.

Lynne moved to the south coast of England in January 2000, having lived in the US most of her life and in South Africa for 4 years in the 1990s. While in the UK she has been teaching and researching in the fields of semantics, pragmatics and psycholinguistics.

As her alter-ego Lynneguist, she also writes the Separated by a Common Language blog. You can follow lynneguist on Twitter.

I really am interested in this! If only it was after I've moved back. I shall see.

Yes, I was also interested in this, sounds controversial and possibly fun, lol ... but I can't make it as I'm going to be out elsewhere that evening. Maybe we can get the speaker to a LAAG social sometime, just for a fun talk. (If anyone does go, please let us have some feedback)
