(last-Sun-monthly) LAAG SOCIAL: "Thou Shalt Observe The Sabbath" (Not Likely!)

  • October 27, 2013 · 3:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Got a party piece, well dust it off. Or come along and watch ;-)

Theme For Our Sunday Socials :TEMPTATION!

Or, VICE IS A VIRTUE (Religious, so-called vice that is)

I never resist temptation, because I have found that things that are bad for me do not tempt me. (George Bernard Shaw)

Why does religion mix up vice with virtue?  Faith; a vice in virtue's clothing that harms others, yet religion seems to look down on people enjoying themselves with things that do no one else any harm! Let's turn it back around ...

We'll break those things morons and mormons believe get you on the Naughty Step! (Adultery might be one we leave to you though!). This month we shall "cavort on a Sunday"!

Community is an important part of this group's remit, so to meet friends old and new come along for an afternoon/evening of conversation & shared laughs with people who understand your views!  It's a friendly & welcoming group, & makes a nice change to be able to say whatever you like without someone deciding to be "offended" (BOO HOO!)

MORE ABOUT THIS EVENT

We might have mixed up the '7 Stupid rules for sheep' with the '10 Stupid rules for sheep', but actually they're all a load of you-know-what anyway, so who cares eh?

This month we've organised to break...

"THOU SHALT OBSERVE THE SABBATH" ?

Not likely, Mate! Nothing upsets upholders of this stupid rule for sheep I mean commandments than those 'demonic' activities of performance... so of course, this meetup is about just that! Let the Music, performance and mayhem commence...

Roger and Steve will be entertaining us with some music

Jason, Rich and Adrian will do some sketches/skits

Cloe and her band of merry students have promised some guitars (and who knows what else!)

Anita might be persuaded (a few vinos should do it!) to sing us some (bawdy?) Latvian songs!

So shake off your inhibitions and perform your favourite party piece, or just come along to watch or have a chat! If you feel like performing a poem, a song, bebop, hard bop (what is that??!), showing us your etchings...or anything else you want to 'exhibit' then here's your chance ;-) Come on, you know you want to, so don't be shy...let us know what you intend to entertain us with, in the comments boxes below.

Anyone want to do whatever is going on below?!

P.S.(All 9 LAAG ORGANISERS WILL BE HAVING AN ORGANISERS' MEETING BEFORE THIS EVENT, AND IF ANY MEMBERS WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS ANY IDEAS WITH US, YOU'RE ARE WELCOME TO COME ALONG EARLY, AT 15:15.  THE SOCIAL STARTS 15:45)

(Voluntary donations of £2 or £3 are suggested towards the LAAG fund, to help towards costs of the group and its activities)

what a Humanist could find to object to in your choice of headings is a mystery, but then they do seem to be a bit confused as to what they stand for.
Sounds like it was a great evening, so have a wonderful next musical meet up.

Grrrreat evening of performances and friendly conversations!
Was very happy to share my songs with you, lovely people :)

Loved your stuff Gaya, the chords are so memorable and interesting! I will be looking them up to hear them again, and I also have Anita's songs in my head " Arvine, arvine arvine arvine"! (Sorry Adam, yours were charming too but not quite so catchy! ...maybe when my Hungarian improves 'a bit' ;-)).

      Thanks Ginny :)) x

What a great afternoon and some real talent. Without being too grandiose... could we think about doing some sort of "linked thing" on Youtube or perhaps that old-fashioned thing a CD... if no one is signed to a a label!

Well, we do have a sound engineer who thought he would get away without doing anything :)... and no doubt an artist or two who could do an album cover etc... No doubt plenty of work, but worth thinking about. Anyone know an atheist drummer?

Maybe sell it at conferences.. Raise the profile a bit more...

And then there is the North American tour!

Wow, just goes to show that trying something new can be so worth it sometimes. A superb day, enjoyed every single performance. Such a warm and appreciative audience too.

It was so great not knowing what was coming next. Sometimes it was even a break, which had its own charm lol.

Nice work Roger - I think everyone really enjoyed Steve's dating ad song. Steve the proof reader - that was funny!

What a wealth of talent we're sitting on! Thanks to all who came and watched and performed. Especially Jason for slipping into the role of MC. We should do this again :-)

    5 · October 27, 2013

    • Jason

Was I MC? Oops. Still, I did say, letting me bring a guitar was like inviting a vampire across the thresshold. But you're right we should definitely do it again. The mix and quality of material was just great.

      2 · October 28, 2013

    • Adrian

Haha well de facto MC. What was great about it was that everything was so impromptu!

Please someone perform this one eh!

    October 27, 2013

  • Gajane G.

I shall try to attend with my new baby guitar! I'll be coming after work, so it'll be around 6pm.
But I should warn you that I can only play my songs, nothing popular, as I have almost zero knowledge of guitar chords :)

    1 · October 24, 2013

    • Kieron

Well, BB King doesn't play chords either,, so you're in good company.

      1 · October 27, 2013

    • Gajane G.

haha, thanks Kieron, I'm no BB King though:)
But will be happy to share my songs with a good company.

      1 · October 27, 2013

  • Roger

Steve & I will be there to play a couple of original songs (& more if there's a great clamour) but I will unfortunately have to leave at around 6.00 as I have to attend a rehearsal.

    October 24, 2013

  • Priscilla R.

How late are you likely to stay guys? The poor worker here finishes work at 5:15.... let me know

    October 23, 2013

    • Cloe

Do not worry, I'm usually there till the bar closes.

      October 23, 2013

    • Georgi L.

Yes likely to be a late one Priscilla, as the social only starts at 16:00ish this Sunday, so you won't miss too much this time if you come after work. Remember it's a new venue this time - covent garden tube :-)

Performed this once in my school's chapel as a light-hearted joke during mass. They almost stopped me halfway through because (direct quote) I wasn't "allowed to make people laugh in church."

    • Georgi L.

Just like people who can't laugh at themselves or decide to be 'offended', organisations that take themselves too seriously have deep rooted insecurities and 'issues'. (Does this mean we can look forward to this rendition then, Cloe?....yeahyeahyeah)

      October 23, 2013

  • Cloe

Word on the street is Georgi is reenacting her rebound pole dancing routine.

    October 12, 2013

Nah, I set it up, innit?

Believe me, standing up on a stage for a few minutes would be a doddle in comparison!

      October 13, 2013

Yep ok, you win the un-doddle stakes

      October 13, 2013

Just spoken with Steve Anthony (my partner in musical crime) & we're going to rehearse up some songs for this session.
