Fancy spreading some reason at a Christian Alpha course? (weekly till mar 25th)

  • February 11, 2014 · 7:15 PM

PLEASE NOTE: YOU WILL NEED TO EMAIL HOLLY FIRST TO ASK IF IT IS OK FOR YOU TO COME ALONG. AND IF YOU DO SIGN-UP BUT THEN CAN'T GO, PLEASE SHOW COURTESY AND LET THEM KNOW WELL IN ADVANCE. Thanks :-)

Info (This is from Stephen Yarde, who went along ( with Kieron and others) to the first session of this alpha course):

From Stephen:
"That was the introductory session entitled "Is there more to life than this?". Next week is session 1 entitled "Who is Jesus?".
In my opinion and looking at all the evidence its most likely that the character Jesus did not even exist but was created by the romans. That will make a good discussion for them to look into. I think i'll give them a link to the documentary 'The God who wasn't there' on youtube.

Here's the email she sent me;

"Hi,

Hope you're having a good week! Alpha week 2 will be taking place next week on Tuesday evening, the 11th February, and we will be looking at the topic of 'Who is Jesus?'. It will be taking place at the Grange Holborn Hotel at 7.15pm. Should the tube strike go ahead we will make sure to finish just before 9pm so everyone can get on the tubes before the strike begins at 9.30pm :)

If you're no longer able to make it please do let me know as soon as possible for catering purposes.

Kind regards,
Holly"

Anyone interested in coming next tuesday evening can just send her an email and ask nicely. I'm sure they wont object. Like i said before, its a great place to practice your street epistemology and introduce critical thinking skills to lots of potential victims of the faith virus.

For anyone going this is essential reading. Richard Carrier concluded that Jesus didn't exist as a person but was, if anything, a composite of some fictional and possibly real characters who lived a various times during a couple of centuries around the time in question. (So basically another mythological King Arthur). He wrote a book about that and also a book about his methodology in his research (basically Bayes' Theroem). Information can be found here: richardcarrier.info

His research represents the first genuinely scientific work on the subject.

Adrian, yes it's not hard for us to understand but trying to tell religious people who have such limited thinking that they don't even wonder why 'their' religion is the "one true" one out of all the thousands ever postulated - is a different kettle of fish entirely isn't it? First they'll baulk at the word 'theory' and misunderstand its meaning, laughly smugly to themselves as though they've caught us out. Then it'll be "well you can't prove Jebus didn't exist". It's a cul-de-sac that leads nowhere IMO - there are easier avenues in which to make them think. But I might be wrong - worth a go if you have the patience ;-)

Damn comments boxes are so shit - can only see one line as you type and can't edit either. Grrr

I'd very much like to join in. I did this a few years ago in Putney and whilst it was a bit like shooting fish in a barrel, it was quite enlightening.

Excellent! Delighted to have you on the team Phil - perhaps you could add which area of London you'd prefer (to the discussion thread Link below) so we can coordinate all this. LINK: http://www.meetup.com...]

Hi all, so since there seems to be interest in this, we will do this as our summer activism programme this year. So far we have Jason S, Stephen Yarde, Kieron, Simon Marks, Roger, Robin, Georgi - so we'll search out a central london alpha course that all of us can get to it fairly easily, and that way we should be able to coordinate with each other and have others there for support. If anyone else is interested please add your name in the comments boxes for this event , or in the discussion thread: http://www.meetup.com/London-Atheist-Activist-Group-friendly-community/messages/boards/thread/41684972/10/#[masked]

Wow, if all of us you name go to the same course it should just about sink it! I feel sorry for the xtians already. Almost.

Well they only seem to allow one atheist per table, and hardly any questions to the group as a whole, so actually if we can cover more tables the better but I don't think we'd be swamping them in any case. Don't feel sorry for them Roger, we're helping them, not attacking.

Id be up for going, anyone else?

Hi Simon. It looks like Kieron and Stephen are going to this next one, (and we'll do a LAAG programme where more of us can go along to another alpha course later this year). Since you haven't been to the first ones in this series, I'd suggest you email Holly and say Stephen & Kieron told you about it and ask her if it'd be ok for you to go too. Email is in the info of the event details above.

I've been to the first two, and hope to go again this Tuesday. Lola, from London Black Atheists, -who 'promoted' the event on their site and some members attended- wrote a good piece about the first one. I'll copy it to a new thread as it is too long to post here, but it is a pretty accurate account as to what happened and the first presentation.

So does Holly know that there are some potential LAAG members coming?

    February 10, 2014

  • Roger

I'm pretty certain I will do one of these in the near future but tomorrow is just a bit too soon (esp. given that at the moment all of my Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and most Friday evenings are spoken for!)

Arghh I play football Tuesday nights! But this sounds fun...
