LAAG NEW MEMBERS/First Timers WELCOMING SOCIAL (but all members welcome)

  • Jun 6, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

ALL MEMBERS WELCOME for a chit chat and social catch-up, however the main purpose is to greet and welcome our newer members & first timers.

ABOUT THIS EVENT

As you've requested, these NEW MEMBERS' SOCIALS have been increased to every two months. As they are very popular do get your RSVP's in, - we limit numbers so we can devote enough time to everyone, and keep it quite 'cosy' :-)

The meetup is aimed at welcoming & getting to know new members/first timers, and some organisers and regulars will be on hand all evening to answer any questions about the group, chat about your individual journeys to atheism if you wish to do so, discuss any ideas etc.

We'll be meeting UPSTAIRS (in our usual private room). More about the event below...

JARVIS LECHAT, INTERSPECIES REPRESENTATIVE, SPEAKING FROM LAAG HQ "My fellow LAAGers, Richard Dawkins says "Getting atheists to agree is like herding cats", is he right?

ABOUT THIS EVENT

Doors: 18:30 UPSTAIRS - do bring your drinks up, and you can also order food (from the main bar on the ground floor),... Here's the menu link - they'll bring food upstairs to you)

At around 19:15, there will be a short presentation, and a group Q& A section.

After that we can chat and socialise individually or in small groups

JUST A LITTLE INTRODUCTION NOW...

London Atheist Activist Group is nicknamed 'LAAGers', a warm (often playful!) community that's serious (but not solemn!) about making a difference. We welcome you! People often say they feel at home very quickly (here are the group's reviews), so please don't be intimidated, no one is pressured to talk or do anything they're not entirely comfortable with!

All members, new and er..er...er...er... 'experienced' /regulars/inbetweeners are also very welcome to come along for a social chit-chat and catch-up, and primarily to help welcome our newer members to our fast-growing community!

Where?

Well served for transport and in a very central location, (From Temple Tube you can even enjoy the gorgeous views of the river first) it's a pleasant 5 mins walk to our (un)spiritual home at the genial Devereux Pub. We'll meet UPSTAIRS, Doors 18:30.

DIRECTIONS

The route to the Devereux Pub from Temple station is very easy and only 5 mins - but we've shown it on the photo below as it can be a bit tricky to find the first time - it involves a pedestrian route going through a covered stone flight of steps.

See you there! And...

What a great bunch of newbies! Really nice to have the chance to meet most of you myself and to catch up with our regulars. And it was really amazing to hear some of the stories and experiences during the presentation section. A really fun night all round I thought, thanks for coming along :-)

New members please report to me on the night for official initiation processes. Thanks

Jesus always make an appearance at the pub in our meetups. Sometimes on the bottom of an extinguished pint of Guinness, sometimes on table tops, if someone spills wine and so on. This usually has the effect of making members of the group speak in tongues. Some people find it comforting, though, as it is proof our sins are being forgiven with reassuring regularity. Having said that, the initiation process can cause what psychologists call regression. Some people found it helpful to bring strawberry yoghurt in the past to ease their anxiety. You'll understand why if you don't get cold feet. Best wishes.

Well the religious people are right - atheists are sad - we certainly didn't have any laughs last night did we?! ;-) Great to meet you all, and thanks to everyone who shared their stories, was touching and makes the efforts of running the group all worthwhile. Lovely to hear the positivity despite all the problems faith had caused. So as we wanted you all to have some mingle time too, we decided to cover the topics of how the forum works, and about activism another time- but here is a link to our REFERENCE forum, which is full of the most useful stuff - including Peter Boghossian and other things we touched on yesterday. http://www.meetup.com/London-Atheist-Activist-Group-friendly-community/messages/boards/forum/9896202

It seems about as many regulars want to come as newbies! I'm sure that says something about how much people enjoy these events.

Who knew atheists like a drink a chinwag too eh? Rather than tea and platitudes, think we're more likely to consume and exhume "the hard stuff" ? ;-)
