Darwin Centre, Natural History Museum

The reality of evolution is more breathtaking and powerful than any superstitious stories offered by religion. Let's celebrate and learn about the man and his rigorous pursuit of truth and science.

What about sexual orientation?  Does it undermine Natural Selection? And how about the dozens of archaeological finds which suggest the existence of man at a time when we were supposed to be apes?  Can so many finds all of these be dismissed as bogus?

Come along for some stimulating conversation and great exhibits.  I'd be interested to find out about the ground-breaking work on the human genome that the Darwin Centre is undertaking.  Those of us who are free afterwards could head off for a drink.

We'll meet by the Darwin Statue inside the main hall, it can be seen from the entrance.

Allow 15 mins to queue for entry.

Completely free event.

Well done guys, great reviews and I'm sorry I missed it. Definitely sounds like it'd be worth doing another one from the great reviews (without my over-zealous travel info this time ;-))... and yesterday for Roger's event was the same - Portrait gallery had L-O-N-G queues but stations etc. all quiet in London despite what TFL says. No need to stop doing events over the Olympic period it seems. Victoria if you want to do another one let me know and I'll email the whole group to announce it. Thx

Hi Victoria, thanks for the nice post. As you know people do pull out of meetups, might not have been ENTIRELY my post that did it ;-). None of us have been through an Olympics in London, so taking what it said on TFL.gov.uk seriously seemed sensible, - now we know to probably ignore it, LOL. Glad you had a good afternoon :-). Was the exhibition what you hoped?

Not to worry. Shame, though, as 7 people pulled out after your post. We still had an enjoyable time, so don't feel bad.

Oh dear, that was not my intention obviously, sorry folks was just reporting what it said on the travel update when I checked this morning. Was trying to be helpful thinking that you might need to allow more time depending where you were coming from. Maybe it's empty as people read the travel news and stayed away. My post was really to say sorry that no regulars would be there to greet new people. It backfired obviously, apologies.

Am there now. South Kensington empty and absolutely no queue. Unfortunately 6 people pulled out due to Ginny's earlier post but there are still 7 of us. Victoria

Hi folks, you're probably aware (but just in case...), olympic cycle race today goes directly past S. Ken and Knightsbridge stations. Finishes at 15:20 but says "roads will be closed for hours after the event". Both stations will also be 'hotspots', so exceptionally busy.
As a result, apologies that no 'regulars' from the group will be there to greet you, but I think some of you do know each other, & will welcome the others I'm sure. Enjoy!, hopefully we'll all meet at a LAAG meetup very soon!

Would love to come, but unfortunately this clashes with another event I going to that same day. Hope to be able to attend another event soon.

Yes, you'll both have to play it by ear. They say the best thing is to stay up and go to bed at the local time but a trip to London is a big ask.

We will be getting back 27 July from USA. Would like to come but may be too jet-lagged. We'll have to see.

I have been to the Nat Hist Mus several times in the last few months. There has always been a queue of several hundred people on the outside ramp waiting perhaps 15 - 20 mins to get in. I fear that the same will occur on 28th - is there not some or other sporting event on bringing extra visitors to London? Would it not be better to meet inside at the Darwin statue - which can be seen from the entrance - to avoid confusion? - whilst allowing perhaps at least 15 min queuing time.

According to TFL, we ought to be OK, but who knows, it is all a bit unknown.
Those attending can exchange mobile numbers and arriving late won't really matter anyhow as we'll be spending a good chunk of time at the museum.

Hi there Victoria, Ben and George - how lovely to see new members being pro-active straight away upon joining :-) A very warm LAAG welcome to all of you, and well done Victoria for putting this event onto our meetup board. I'll try and come along ...Olympic travel chaos permitting.
