REGULAR Sunday SOCIAL + guests Sanderson Jones & Pippa Evans (Atheist Church)

  • January 27, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

NB: Pub opens at 13:00UPDATE: NOW FULL but waitlist is open and/or you could stand or find someone who will let you sit on their knees ;-)

Space is limited, so please only put yourself down if you're coming :-).  Our guests will be the pair who have just started the first 'ATHEIST CHURCH' - Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans. This has been the subject of discussion on our forum over the last few weeks, so this meetup will give us the chance to see what their thinking is behind the 'church' and also to ask them questions about the project.

There is no food at this pub, so you could bring along sandwiches ...but e.g Mac-D's might not be welcome!

Nearest tubes: short walk from Gt Portand street, Regents park, Goodge st, or Oxford circus

Price: Free.  Please only put yourself down if you can come as space is limited. And if you find you can't make it after all, try and cancel in plenty of time so others can come instead (not cancelling only at the last minute, if possible please! ;-))

As with all our events, our friends from CLHG and indeed from any other secular organisation/meetup groups are always welcome, but as space is limited for this event please list yourselves or email us, thank you!.

Hi Ive been Meetups silent for a while. I like the idea of sunday meet up so hope this happens again. Is it only going to be monthly?
I'd love the idea of a weekly meet that doesn't revolve around the great god wonga. i.e. something cheap and drop in.

I can also confirm that the Sunday Social at the end of March will actually be at the beginning of April as we're attending the Sunday Assembly for their Easter service!

      1 · January 30, 2013

    • Joanne

Ummm isn't Easter Sunday the 31st? Or have those atheists just decide to have Easter whenever suits them? Do they not know that it celebrates the resurrection of Christ which is why the date moves each year????

      January 30, 2013

  • Georgi L.

I was onside with the idea of community, but sceptical about the churchy aspects. Sanderson was a compelling speaker though. Tagline of the Assembly being 'live better, help often, wonder more' ...good I thought, and I'm thinking now that perhaps it's no bad thing after all, to cater for the segment of the non believers' community that do want to sing Jerusalem. Yikes, not me ...but I am liking the idea more overall than I thought I would, even the churchy aspects. They're doing an Easter service (!) ...reclaiming the idea of Easter as a cultural one ...Hmm, not sure about that but we'll arrange a group social on Sunday apr 7th, to go along and see!

Well the celebrations that have been usurped by the church pre-date christianity anyway so you could say we're reclaiming them quite legitimately.

So it is still called a "church". Weren't people coming up with other suggestions at one point?

Sorry if I am behind with the discussion - I have been away for some time.

Why is there a space issue? I see there is one person waiting for this event but i intended to bring my girlfriend. Is that ok?

    January 26, 2013

    • Georgi L.

Hi Paul, There is a space issue because we have taken a separate room rather than being in the main bar. Since it's nicer if people can be comfortably seated we've put a limit on numbers but yes, do bring your gf along, we can squash up a bit/stand/ sit on knees! I've also said the same to MK (the waitlist person). See you tomorrow!

Please note everyone coming, that the pub only opens at 13:00...don't want you to have to wait around in the cold!

Sounds good, there should be regular "services" held every night round London in small "chapels" (PUB), for the Unfaithful to meet,! I have a confession I enjoy social drinking, with people free of spirits.

  • Sanch

I will be a little late guys, hope that's ok :)

    January 22, 2013

    • Georgi L.

Hi Sanch, these Sunday events are relaxed socials ...no specific agenda or debate, so feel free to arrive whatever time you like. :-) Just FYI, we'll probably ask Sanderson and Pippa to give us a little talk around 2pm, but hopefully they'll stick around after that for people to talk to them informally as well.

used to be a woolahuftamuff but gave up on that on the basis that he kept breaking all of their chairs

    January 22, 2013

    • Adrian

Hi Paul, er, what's a woolawhatever?! Also I notice in your profile you've put "if the law was ever to change I would pick up a gun and get rid of them all at first opportunity that time will come and I have training to use one. " I guess it's intended humorously but it could be misinterpreted so I'd be a lot happier if you could amend it. This is a peaceful group, much as we'd all like to see the end of religion!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
