Is Monarchy the reason for our non-secular state?, NEW Peter Boghossian FORUM ...Jan Newsletter from London Atheist Activist Group (LAAG)

Happy New Year, dear LAAGers!

SPEAKER EVENT - TUESDAY 14th, 7pm doors/7:30 Start

The parallels for irrational deference, privileges in law, and sycophancy mean that a vast majority of atheists are republicans, yet even many of us don't realise the real facts.

Why are we the ONLY country (besides Iran!) to have UNELECTED religious clerics in our government?

Why are we the only developed nation that ISN’T secular (with a State Religion)? Is the Constitution of Monarchy (partly/severely/entirely) responsible? You betcha.

Is there any place for medieval neo-feudal privilege in a modern society anyway? It brings in tourism you say?...actually it doesn't even do that! Want to find out the real facts and dispel the myths? There are a few places left for the talk on Tuesday …come along and hear from REPUBLIC, and discuss!

...And here's this month's Caption Competition to get you in the mood ;-)

(NEW FORUM!) BOGHOSSIAN/Street Epistemology

LAAG intends to develop our proactive stance against faith even more this year, so we have created a new forum which will include all our reference material on Peter Boghossian and his “Street Epistemology” method. Since our link-up with Dr. Peter Boghossian in August last year, we will be continuing to expand and improve our street epistemology...(We also hope to have another Peter Boghossian Virtual Meetup this month ...details to follow)

Dr. Peter Boghossian's book ‘A Manual for Creating Atheists’ gives method & examples of how to start meaningful 'interventions' against the faith virus. (There are of course other methods to engage with the religious but many of us have found this the easiest and least confrontational to put into practice). Despite it's title, and though the end result could/should well be a 'conversion', it's about helping the religious to value belief revision & enable them to develop a mechanism that lets them differentiate reality from make-believeland. Dawkins says it's "essential for nonbelievers who want to do more than carp about religion, but to weaken it's odious grip on the world)

(Here's the Amazon link to get the book either hard copy or Kindle (The Kindle plugin can be downloaded for free to use on a PC or Mac - and it's instant!) : AMAZON LINK)

And as some of you have been asking - yes, it is now available as an audiobook - you can get it free as a new member of Audible.

Last Sun Monthly SOCIAL, Sunday Jan 26th, From 2pm – The 'vice of the month' is GREED!

Come and learn poker from a professional, get tips on card counting and blackjack, make like a mobster or a moll ;-), play monopoly, or just come along for a chat and a drink! PLUS, we'll have readings from Robert Breese, and some freebie copies of his hardback book. RSVP HERE

NEW MEMBERS - welcome to the group! ... you'll be warmly included (the natives are friendly!), so do join in these events without trepidation :-)

Don't know how to join in? Worry not - we’ve set up a permanent reference guide - it'll give you (quick and easy!) step-by-step help on how to take part in our frank and vivacious online debates (e.g how to post pics etc): LINK (If you need any further help, feel free to email Georgi)

Please don’t be intimidated to join in with meetups or in the forum, as whilst we encourage frank discussion, we also aim to be a friendly and constructive group. And if you can't participate, we understand! ... even silent membership is helpful …you’re giving constructive atheism & rationalism a stronger voice just by being part of the group :-). But we do have events to suit almost all tastes and social events are a good way to get to know people - the NEW MEMBERS events have a great response, as have our end-of-month Sunday 'VICE' socials ;-) ...more events are on the board.

Thanks all, for your participation/membership/activism, & good humour.
Have a great month, (all feedback always welcome)
