The London Atheists Meetup Group Pages

This is a discussion group for positive atheists*.

There is no evidence for the existence of gods, benign or otherwise. No ifs and buts, no maybes, just us and the here and now. No judgment day, no heaven or hell other than the heaven or hell we can create here on earth.

*We are not 'passive' atheists who think that religion, with a few (foreign) exceptions are OK and shouldn't be challenged, criticised or opposed - in case we offend them.

Religions - superstition, ancient dogma and sectarianism do immense harm, particularly the patriarchal religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam, are harmful to individuals and have distorted our cultures with their superstitious prejudices and narrow punitive attitudes. Millions of people have suffered and died throughout history and millions more today suffer and die as a direct or indirect result of religious teaching and practices. And there is plenty of evidence from history and current events.

Their political activities force their policies onto those who disagree with them and the divisiveness they perpetuate as well as the constant conflict they cause or exacerbate are harmful to communities, national and international - and we are not afraid to voice these opinions criticisms and oppose the claims and activities of public, political aspects of religion that affect us all.

This group is not here to convert others to our opinion but to discuss our opinions amongst ourselves without hindrance from anyone, including 'passive atheists' who think we should not challenge the religions and their claims and political and social activities. What people believe privately is their own business.

It's not always easy to debate atheism with family or friends, yet we need to develop our ideas and share our experience. We need to discuss many issues, overcoming discrimination in education and employment, coping with life events, exploring moral issues from an atheist point of view, sharing our history and being able to express the ideas we share with other non believers, we also promote the need for secularism in the fullest sense of the word - the separation of church and state, and a secular society if there is to be world peace.

It is up to us to criticise and oppose superstition and sectarianism and the malign effects of religion. We promote the rational good sense of atheism and secularism, however difficult it might be to get our rationalist views into public debate.

Atheist opinion has been systematically suppressed by social exclusion, punishment and censorship over the centuries of Christianity, and only now are able to express our ideas without being misrepresented, we must make the most of it and not allow others to stifle our right to our opinions.

This group provides one small space for free speech for strong atheist opinion.

We're friendly and easy to find - see event details for directions.
