Where is Atheism today & what are WE doing?

There is an increasing amount of public discussion of atheism but there is still an awful lot of confusion both inside and outside of the secular humanist movement. There are so many issues and ideas that need the time for IN_DEPTH discussion when the pressure is to skip from one idea to another with flashes of insight and anecdote.

We are facing an increasingly desperate struggle by the religions to maintain their domination of culture and society as they see the threat of reason and science to their religions, not to mention the exposure of the evil effects of their distorted thinking and attitudes.

This leads to so much superficial discussion, always dealing with the immediate topic then on to the next without taking time to explore them and draw any conclusions - not joining up the dots so that we can build up a coherent picture of what a world devoid of organised religion offers.

How can we ensure that our views and organisation will not just dissipate in the explosion as they disintegrate leaving the ground open for them to carry on as before with the relics of their surviving infrastructure.

My only answer so far is to trust in the bottom-up approach and for us to try to ensure that there are enough people who understand the issues to make them strong enough to sustain the revolution and ensure it delivers the promise of a rational, progressive humanitarian future for humanity as it hurtles on its current way towards overpopulation poverty and conflict and all that will bring.

Hello Sue , I have only lately become aware of your movement and I have been an atheist most of my life , but I had come to the conclusion that I was alone in my view .
I am not sure that what I am writing now is going to be seen by anyone and I would welcome a message from someone in your group , I have written a book on the subject and it is on sale at Amazon , and Barnes and Noble ,
I am now awaiting a reply that will let me in ,
    regards Desmond McReynolds

This was the last straw and I walked out. I wont have somebody talking to me like that. I only wish I had walked out sooner. I am not surprised people keep leaving this group (people have left in the past because of problems with Sue). DO NOT JOIN THIS GROUP. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED."

..The organizer Sue has a negative attitude and doesn't like any opinions that differ from her own. She spent half the time slagging off former members, other groups, humanists, The BHA, and even current members for not doing what she wants. She is extremely controlling and her views are aggressive and when I said I didn't agree with her she then began to attack me personally asking "what experience do you have" as if I am simply not allowed to disagree and have a different opinion from her!!..

"Newcomer from another group"? What is the relevance of including this phrase in your reply? Please do clarify exactly what you mean by this.
(Since your reply is nebulous without the (disappeared!) review to which you refer I am posting it back here): "This meet up was HORRIBLE, I got a bad impression as soon as I got there hardly anybody turned up and one person even skipped out at the beginning by pretending he was going to the toilet...

The meeting was ruined from the start by being relocated in the opposite part of the building without any notice so out of 22 members who RSVP'd only five of us managed to find it & further confused by a large commercial Piano Sales booking)

A newcomer from another group, hostile from the start, was obviously intent on expressing her pre-formed opinions - making statements showing she had no knowledge of the history of the Secular Humanist Movement or the profile of this group as a radical part of the modern atheist movement. It seems impossible to get through to some people that outspoken atheism has its part to play in the modern atheist movement. And we have a right to express our opinions without those who disagree going into a strop if I do not agree with their naive and uninformed opinions at their first meeting.

Eventually after she had stomped out we did manage to have some useful discussion. But did not of course - answer the question - we have a long way to go.
