Beginners and Improvers Patchwork and Quilting with Jelly Rolls

  • Aug 23, 2014 · 10:00 AM

We will meet for 6 hours to make this quick simple patchwork quilt using pre-cut Jelly rolls. Your lovely quilt will be approx 115cm x130cm

Perfect size as a lap quilt/ throw for yourself or as good size toddler quilt.

We will chat about fabrics, threads and using simple tools (rotary cutter and mat) and of course make a lovely simple quilt step by step.

• Heres what you need to bring:

• Pre-cut jelly roll (2.5 inch strips - you will need at least 30 strips) or

•  An assortment of your favourite cotton fabrics that compliment each other. (about 1.5 metres in total)

• 1.5 metres of cotton fabric for the back

• Cotton wadding (you will need about 1.5 metre x 1.5 metre - I will also have some on the day)

• And your lovely self!

I will provide the sewing machines and threads which is included.

    Hi Bica,
It has been a while since I have been fabric shopping in the City. Hmm try Petticoat Lane market on a sunday and Brick Lane over the weekend. Any problems, come back to me and I will have another think. J

Hi Jennifer, thanks so much for the answers and sorry for the late reply, busy weekend! I live in the Isle of Dogs (Docklands/Canary Wharf) and work in Liverpool St (work is till 6 pm) by the way. So look forward to your recommendations for shops. By the way, what are the timings for the class? I think the timings on the posting are not right. Thanks again. Bica

    Hello again Bica,
Just noticed I didn't answer your last questions! Re sewing skills - it would be helpful / quicker for you if you have used a sewing machine before. If you haven't, don't let it put you off. I would be happy to walk you through the basics. J

    Hello there Bica,
Good questions... Jelly rolls vary in price but you can get a roll with about 30 stripes from Hobby Craft for about £8. Jelly rolls are precut into 2.5' stripes. You can also buy fabrics by half metre/fat quarter and cut them into strips on the day as I will be showing you how to use a rotary cutter and self healing mat. Average prices for cotton fabric for half metre range between £2 and £5. I will have cotton wadding on the day which is £5 for half a metre. If you tell me where you live - i.e north, south, east or west london, I will be able to tell you where you can buy good quality fabric at reasonable prices.
    Hope this helps.

Hi Jennifer, lovely to know that you teach this beautiful craft! I am interested in learning, but before I sign up for the class I wanted to know how much the materials required are likely to cost and what is the best place to buy them? Also what is required in terms of sewing/machine skills? Thank you!!
