Re: [London-Code-Dojo] Code Retreat

Hi all,

I think it will depend on whether the idea behind the event is to learn, improve or create something new ( or a mix of those! )

I find that at hackathons you get stuff done but you normally cut corners. You might learn something new but you won't necessarily be "improving".

But then again I've only been at hackathons where there was a presentation after X hours and you either cut it or didn't. If there's no time pressure it might be different.

Personally I'm happy to take part in any event that will help me to learn and / or improve. If something is created as a by-product of it, the better.

Cheers,
Gonçalo Silva

Hi,

I like the idea of a hackaton helping an opensource project. I participated in one to extend hackful europe, and although I enjoyed the experience, I struggled with ruby (hackful is a ruby on rails website similar to hackernews). I've been thinking in collaborating with diaspora project with a scala implementation. Not to reimplement it from scratch, but to implement something that can interact with the original.

People have been asking me for a longer Code Dojo for some time, so I'm planning a Saturday all-day Code Dojo for the 3rd November.

This will be something a bit special, and I'm wondering whether people would be interested in:

  • A longer format code dojo (more time/space to explore and learn different approaches), or
  • A more 'hackathon' style event with a goal to produce an OpenSource project, or
  • Something else - please suggest!

I'm interested to hear what people think,

Nigel
