Essex Countryside Hike - Audley End & Saffron Walden - 11 Miles (18km)

We return to Essex - yippee! This is surely the most underated area close to London for excellent and surprisingly unspoilt countryside hikes, varied scenery and charming, blonde and tanned locals? On this occasion, we will leave the seaside behind to explore this area (admittedly close to the Hertfordshire boundary) of attractive undulating rural countryside, taking in vistas of the magnificent 17C Audley End House, a traditional Essex church or two and the fine medieval buidings, parks and mazes of the town of Saffron Walden.

The Plan

The hike is overall fairly gentle, but is undulating in parts. As the daylight gets longer, so does the hike, which will be ~11 miles in total. We will take lunch in a pub in Saffron Walden (The 8 Bells) at around 13:30. Note that we walk through the grounds of Audley End House, but time precludes visiting the impressive formal and vegetable gardens (for which charges apply) and the house itself is closed to the public at this time of year.

At the end of the hike back at Audley End station, everyone is welcome to join me at a particularly agreeable countryside pub for more refreshments, socialising and perhaps a game or two of Scrabble, but there is also the option to head straight home at this point.

Travel

For those coming by train, we will catch the 09:23 train from Liverpool Street (probably Platform 4) to Audley End (arrives 10:24). Meet in the vicinity of the information desk opposite Platform 8 on the main concourse in plenty of time (09:10 at the latest) to organise tickets and find the train.

We will get the train back to London from Audley End (at x10 and x47 each hour) at the end of the hike. The journey takes at least 60 minutes and the earliest you can expect to get back to central London is around 18:30.

If coming by car, meet the group on the Cambridge bound platform at Audley End station at 10:24.

Cost

£12 payable in cash on the train, which includes both the outward and return train tickets. Note that the train tickets require us to travel together in groups of 4, but we will team people up for the return journey if we split into separate groups!

Just a quick note (albeit slightly delayed) to say thank you to Andy & Paul for organising a lovely walk, a good pub lunch, and ensuring none of us got lost! Shame I missed the scrabble... sounds like it was an interesting game!

A brilliant day out on a fine late winter's day - thanks a lot everybody for getting out of bed early enough to come along! Having a group member knocked over by a panicked Muntjac was a new experience for me, but unfortunately the deer made off before we could get a photo. Anyway, Essex is wonderful, but it's off to the Chiltern hills and the Sussex coast next - I hope to see you there!

Hi all, the weather is set fair for tomorrow, but do expect a little mud after the recent rain and snow. For anyone getting to Liverpool Street by tube, note that engineering works are seriously affecting the sub-surface lines in the area, but the Central Line is operational. See you all tomorrow, Andy

Just to let you know, that I have removed about 15 members who didn't show up at the events this weekend and will continue the "clean up" operation of members who don't show up or drop off meetups in the last 24 hours without a valid reason. Walks are VERY popular events and we always have long waiting lists yet some people think it is OK to not show up or drop an hour before the event. It is not, so I'd advise you to ammend your RSVP in time. Otherwise there is a strong possibility that you'll become a "former member".
