Romanzo Criminale is an Italian film released in 2005, directed by Michele Placido.

Set in the 1970s, it's the story of three lifelong friends who take control of organized crime in Rome.

It is based on Giancarlo De Cataldo's 2002 novel, which is in turn inspired by the Banda della Magliana true story.

The Magliana gang was one of the most powerful Italian criminal associations, dominating Rome's drug, gambling and other kinds of crime activities from the early 1970s to 1992 (death of Enrico De Pedis). The gang's affiliates start their career kidnapping rich people, drug dealing (hashish, cocaine, heroin, etc.).  From the 1970s they started working with the Italian secret service, fascists, terrorists, the Sicilian Mafia, Camorra and many more. Some gang members are still alive, as inmates of an Italian prison, or justice collaborators.

Awards: 22 wins (best director, best new actress, best screenplay etc.) and 15 nominations (incl. European Film Awards - Audience Award)

Running time: 152 minutes (yes, that's 2.5 hours)

Meet up:

The movie will start at 7.30pm, but members usually come early to make use of the bar and space upstairs for a drink and/or some dinner.

Please note that we show this movie for educational purposes within our club.  This is a strict members only event.  Please do not embarrass yourself (and us) by bringing a guest, who we would need to turn away.

Please note that we ask members for a contribution of £3 to allow us to budget for future events.  Your support is very much appreciated! Thanks.

The upstairs bar will be opened for us from 7.00pm and please order any drinks and food at this bar.  Please note that the kitchen will close at 9.00pm, so if you want to have food you will need to order before then.

London European Club is run by dedicated volunteers, who don't have time to waste with people who don't show up at events. If you don't show up to three events that you have RSVPed to, you will be banned from the Club. Changing your RSVP in the last 24 hours prior to the event is strongly discouraged and may result in an immediate ban, especially when it comes to our most popular events such as this one.

Violent (as expected) and very long. Reminded me Scorsese in places - the juxtaposition of music against violent scenes. Nice to see Rome as a setting for a change instead of Sciliy or Naples. A good time spent chatting to people.
