Chilterns Hike, Wendover to Princes Risborough - 18km (11 Miles)

  • Mar 16, 2013 · 9:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Spring has finally arrived, so we are making a welcome return to the hills of the Chilterns to make the most of the longer and (hopefully) warmer days. Paul, a lifetime local to the area, will make a rare foray to the head of the group for this hike and point out the many interesting sights on the way.

This area of the Chilterns is heavily wooded, with a good chance of seeing displays of wild Spring flowers and various wildlife, but also offers some fine vistas over the surrounding countryside from several view-points. There are also extensive neolithic fort remains and the country pad of the Prime Minister to see en route.

We will stop for a pub lunch around 2/3 of the way through the hike and there is also the option to stay on at the end of the hike at a suitable establishment to socialise further. Those who would prefer to head home straight after the hike are welcome to do so.

Transport: Meet by 09:20 at the latest at Marylebone mainline station near the ticket office to catch the 09:42 train to Wendover, arriving at 10:29. We will return from Princes Risborough to Marylebone at the end of the hike - the journey takes ~45 minutes and the earliest you can expect to get back to London is ~18:00.

Cost:£15, payable in cash on the day, to include the guided and backmarked hike and return train fares.

If, like me, you need a coffee to join the land of the living at this time of the morning, getting a free Bite card gets you 20% off at many station outlets: https://www.bitecard.co.uk/Home

The walking pace will be sociable, but the hike is a lot more undulating than most of those we have been doing over the Winter and the trails may be muddy & slippery if has rained recently, so a reasonable level of fitness and suitable clothing / footwear are required to enjoy the trip.

Only RSVP YES if you are certain that you can come to this walk and update your RSVP if you can no longer attend. Our walks are very popular and we restrict numbers for logistical, safety and quality reasons. If you don't show up to three events that you have RSVP'd YES to, you will be banned from the Club, as you could be preventing other members from attending events.

Woke up questioning my sanity at going through with this given the weather, however, I must admit to being very glad I did. Thanks to Paul, Andy and all the LECies I met on the day. Good exercise, great views and some very nice people.

The weather turned out to be almost perfect for hiking, the extreme mud made for a great calf workout & the clouds, rainbow and occasional downpour were just amazing, so congartulations to the hardcore 15 who ignored the weather forecast!

Thanks guys - great day/work out. Today I went beyond my comfort zone with the mud (yuuuk!) and I count that as an achievement. Good route, with some challenging hills that made it even more interesting :)

Thank you Andy/Paul for a great walk. It's so nice being led by a local to the area. I was fascinated by the stories of the ancient people who lived there thousands of years ago. It was my first time in the Chilterns and will definitely go back.

Hi everyone, there is likely to be a little rain this morning, but it should dry up from around midday. The walk is definitely still going ahead and I for one am looking forward to some spectacular clouds, the uber fresh air, splashing in the puddles and a nice warm pub lunch! See you at Marylebone, Andy

Just hope the weather forecast for Saturday improves. Otherwise I might have to rush to get a working waterproof coat.
