Rye to Hastings-24km walk

This is the most challenging walk of the Time Out walks but it is also one of my favourite, a walk which is ideal for an English summer, best done on a long warm day. We will be starting from Rye and going through Wincelsea following the River Brede and canals which will take us to our lunch stop in the 17th century pub near the church in Icklesham. All Saints Church contains a variety of styles and is worth visiting. Ex-Beatle, Paul McCartney who lives a few kilometers away from Wincelsea funded the renovation (and based his recording studios) of Hog Hill windmill which is visible from the walk route.

Then we'll have do a detour off the coastal route through Fairlight as a result of severe coastal erosion. We will retun back to the coastline walking through Hastings Country Park with steep climbs. There is more steep climbing and a descent into the old town of Hastings with its net shops on the beach (tall, black wooden sheds that were built for hanging out fishermen's nets). In medieval times Hastings was one of the Cinque Ports (pronounced "sink") which supplied 25 ships for 15 days a year for defence purposes before the Royal Navy existed.

Hastings also has a Norman castle which is visible from the seafront on the way to the station.

This walk is long and challenging and you need to be reasonably fit to join it. Please do not come along if you haven't done challenging walks before and if you have any injuries. For more details or to print a copy of the walk go to the Time Out web site http://www.walkingclub.org.uk/book_1/walk_25/index.shtm

Please be punctual, we'll be taking the 9:27 train on a group saver ticket which should not cost more than £15.30 for the return journey. Please bring cash for tickets and the £4 contribution to the Club as well as your pub lunch.

PLEASE NOTE:

The London European Club is run by busy individuals with full time jobs and very active social lives. They have decided to volunteer their time and organise events just because they are nice. Thus we don't have time to waste with people who do not show up at events, so members who don't show up will be removed from the Club. Do not become a "former member"-RSVP accurately.

It was lovely to meet everyone on the walk and the most beautiful spot for lunch. Thoroughly enjoyable! Though I would say that it would be wise to travel back in fours as almost had to pay the fare again )c: But luckily the conductor let us off (c:

Two most important bits of information if you are joioning this walk: wear ankle supporting shoes with a good grip and bring a packed lunch.

  • Eser

Maja, I see RSVPs are closed but can I still join pls?

    Thanks, Eser

    May 11, 2013

    • Maja

No, the group is already large enough which is why the RSVPs are closed. Please join us on a different walk in future.

      May 11, 2013

  • Elena

Thank you Maja, yes it was on the descprition. However there is no return time; do you think we can have a rough estimate of when we will be getting the train back?
    thanks again
    Elena

    May 11, 2013

    • Maja

No I can't. It depends on the size and the fitness of the group, so I never give any estimates about going back. If you are joining this walk you should plan to spend the whole day on the outing.

  • Elena

Hi, it's my first time, I' m not sure how I will find you...also, do we buy the ticket in advance?
    looking forward to meet you

    May 10, 2013

    • Maja

Look for a large group of hikers at Charing Cross station. We will be standing in front of the ticket area. I will be buying the tickets on a group saver and collecting money on the train so please bring cash. By the way this is already written in the hike description.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
