This is the most challenging walk of the Time Out walks but it is also one of my favourite, a walk which is ideal for an English summer, best done on a long warm day. We will be starting from Rye and going through Wincelsea following the River Brede and canals which will take us to our lunch stop in the 17th century pub near the church in Icklesham. All Saints Church contains a variety of styles and is worth visiting. Ex-Beatle, Paul McCartney who lives a few kilometers away from Wincelsea funded the renovation (and based his recording studios) of Hog Hill windmill which is visible from the walk route.
Then we'll have do a detour off the coastal route through Fairlight as a result of severe coastal erosion. We will retun back to the coastline walking through Hastings Country Park with steep climbs. There is more steep climbing and a descent into the old town of Hastings with its net shops on the beach (tall, black wooden sheds that were built for hanging out fishermen's nets). In medieval times Hastings was one of the Cinque Ports (pronounced "sink") which supplied 25 ships for 15 days a year for defence purposes before the Royal Navy existed.
Hastings also has a Norman castle which is visible from the seafront on the way to the station.
This walk is long and challenging and you need to be reasonably fit to join it. Please do not come along if you haven't done challenging walks before and if you have any injuries. For more details or to print a copy of the walk go to the Time Out web site http://www.walkingclub.org.uk/book_1/walk_25/index.shtm
Please be punctual, we'll be taking the 9:27 train on a group saver ticket which should not cost more than £15.30 for the return journey. Please bring cash for tickets and the £4 contribution to the Club as well as your pub lunch.
The London European Club is run by busy individuals with full time jobs and very active social lives. They have decided to volunteer their time and organise events just because they are nice. Thus we don't have time to waste with people who do not show up at events, so members who don't show up will be removed from the Club. Do not become a "former member"-RSVP accurately.
