In the House (France, 2012, 105 mins, English subtitles) is a witty and inventive drama that fuses black comedy, romance and jeopardy into an entertaining ride.
Adapted from the Spanish play, The Boy in the Last Row, it is directed by François Ozon and stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Fabrice Luchini and Ernst Umhauer.
Germain (Luchini) is a middle-aged schoolteacher whose vocational spirit has been eroded over time. However, in 16-year-old Claude (Umhauer), his interest is piqued suddenly by a rare spark of creative-writing talent. As Claude relates his surprising adventures at the house of fellow pupil Rapha in his essays, the young prodigy hooks both his teacher and the man’s similarly intrigued wife (Scott Thomas) with an unfolding drama of inter-generational lust and deception.
