Documentary Series: THROUGH ITALIAN EYES Italian documentary makers explore the world outside Italy

HOME SWEET HOME

Released: 2012

Duration 91mins

Director: Enrica Colusso

Four years in the making, the film brings out the drama of a massive regeneration scheme unfolding in the heart of London. It is also a personal journey of discovery, in the city the filmmaker chose as her home, 20 years ago. Centred around the now derelict Heygate Estate (Elephant & Castle), Home Sweet Home tells a complex but intimate story of urban and social transformation, and asks: what kind of society are we building?

Background notes: The Corbusian concept behind the construction of the estate was of a modern living environment. The neo-brutalist architectural aesthetic was one of tall, concrete blocks surrounding central communal gardens.

Designed by Tim Tinker, the estate was completed in 1974. It was once a popular place to live, the flats being thought light and spacious, but the estate later developed a reputation for crime, poverty and dilapidation.

Due to its urban decay and location, the estate has been extensively used as a filming location. Films have included Attack the Block, Shank and Harry Brown and The Bill TV series.

High profile music videos, including "Hung Up" by Madonna and "Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away)" by David Guetta have also been filmed on the estate.

In total, 76 films have been made on the estate over three years to 2010, earning Southwark Council £91,000 in fees (..ONLY?). It is now been demolished as part of the Walworth Road redevelopment plan (which will earn the investors MUCH MORE).

Enrica Colusso
studied cinema in Rome where she started her filmmaking career.  In '88 she moved to Paris to attend two documentary workshops at Les Atéliers VARAN. In '95 she graduated in Documentary Filmmaking at the National Film and Television School (U.K.)

She has realised several award-winning documentaries, since 2003 she teaches Film at Roehampton University, in London.

The event is FREE but booking is essential: do it here.

For those who wish to chat and exchange their impressions of the London everchanging landscape, afterwards, the Shakespeare pub near Victoria provides a convenient 'watering' point.

Meeting was good, the movie a bit too biased.
The author said she struggled not to be, and I believe her, but the result is hardly balanced.

Yup, I agree with you - I think it's unavoidable. Question: what if it had been biased towards the other side? (i.e. a rational argument based of the financial benefits the regeneration plans brings to the owners of properties in the area, the investors, the UK economy as a whole? let's not forget most of the investments for these sort of plans come from outside the EU and they help mellowing the effect of the crisis in GB)

It's true it did go on a bit longer than it probably needed to, though I enjoyed it. I think it's probably quite difficult to portray areas of controversy without bias one way or another. Aside from the political issues I did enjoy the touching and sensitive look at some of the residents lives, what home meant to them and how it felt to be dislocated from their community after so many decades of being a part of it.

Interesting subject matter but it went on a bit too long. Wasn't clear what the point was but then again I was tired and distracted by Marcello's t-shirt. Great conversation in the pub afterwards organised by Supergirl Tiziana. Grazie!

As expected, the film was a documentary - so the plot was more informative than exciting. Good socialisation at the pub, thanks for coming everyone. (and let's not forget the free aperitif the ICI will offer next month..)

Hi, great film thanks for organising Tiziana. Not something I would normally pick out perhaps but I found it very engaging. Unfortunately I had to leave straight after the Q&A so didn't get to talk to you guys. Next time x
