Exhibition: J.M.W. Turner and the sea + Cutty Sark

There are several options how to join this meetup, please check out the options below. Please also be advised that each part will cost £12.

Turner & the sea

This landmark exhibition celebrates the lifelong fascination of J.M.W. Turner with the sea, bringing together an outstanding collection of masterpieces from around the world including The Fighting Temeraire, voted ‘Britain’s favourite painting’, and Wreck of a Transport Ship, not seen in the UK for nearly 40 years.

Explore Turner’s pioneering and often controversial approach in capturing the beauty and power of seascapes, alongside iconic works by other great artists including van de Velde, Vernet, Constable and Gainsborough.

Take in his experimental style in depicting the sea’s many moods and dramas with extraordinary effects of light and colour, conveying atmosphere and feeling as much as physical form.

Greenwich market

Visiting exhibitions always deserves a proper break afterwards, so we will enjoy some food and drinks at and around the Greenwich market.

Cutty Sark

In keeping with the maritime character of this meetup, we will then proceed to visit the Cutty Sark, the last surviving tea clipper. You can explore the different decks of the Cutty Sark and stand below the copper plated keel, by now a world famous picture.

Planned schedule for the day

11:00: We will meet at the entrance to the Turner exhibition (NOT the entrance of the museum, but of the exhibition!!!). The entrance to the exhibition costs £10. It is advisable to book a ticket in advance.

around 13:00: after the exhibition we will proceed to Greenwich market and maybe a nearby pub to have lunch and something to drink

14:30: We will meet in the ticket hall of the Cutty Sark. The ticket costs £12

There will of course be the option of heading to a pub after the visit of the Cutty Sark.

You can join us at either 11:00 for the Turner exhibition (£10) and/or at 14:30 for the visit of the Cutty Sark (£12). Please be advised that due to the fuzzy RSVP system, we will not be able wait for anybody arriving late. We will enter the exhibition at 11:00 and will start our visit of the Cutty Sark shortly after 14:30.

Let's meet in beautiful Greenwich and enjoy a very maritime day

Please only RSVP if you are willing to pay

• £10 for the exhibition or

• £12 for the visit of the Cutty Sark or

• £22 for both the exhibition and Cutty Sark

Our "no show" policy applies to all including this event.

My thanks to Henning for organising this event, the Turner exhibition was truly excellent and supports the view that he may have been one of the early impressionsists. The Cutty Sark is an interesting artifact, but after learning how much re-construction of the ship had taken place, I was left wondering was this a piece of history or a replica of a piece of history! :) A lovely day spent in the company of lovely people.

Hi Henning, sorry about the late notice but a delivery I was expecting this morning is now being delayed and I will therefore not be able to join the group. I wanted to come for the Cutty Sark only but it looks like it is no longer possible. I will send you an email as well as my mobile is currently not working. Have a good one!

For anyone who has a National Art Pass (available from the Art Fund at artfund.org), entry to the exhibition is half price, I believe. The Cutty Sark will still be full price, however.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
