Discussion @LSE: 'The Old "new" nationalisms in Post-security Europe'

The debate 'Surprise What Surprise?: The Old "new" nationalisms in Post-security Europe'will explore the effect on the crisis and EU institutional action on public opinion, in particular the dynamics between the former and the growth of illiberal nationalism. Speaker will be well known Sociologist, Professor Mabel Berezin (Cornell University). Discussion will be chaired by LSE's Prof Damian Chalmers.

Berezin's research asks how shared cultural meanings and practices shape a) political institutions such as the state; b) social processes around political movements and ideologies; and c) agents through the construction of political identities. Her methodology is primarily comparative and historical. Her current work focuses on contemporary sites of social, political and cultural change--places where political arrangements have collapsed and new institutions and identities are in the process of formation.

The event, which is free and open to all (no ticket or registration required) starts at 6.30pm, but it's important that you arrive at the venue by 6.20pm latest. Please go directly to the New Theatre (1st floor) and take your seat (standard seat, not reserved) and let's meet up afterwards to carry on the discussion at a nearby pub.
