The Great British Summer is finally here, so let's all turn gently rosy cheeked together while being kissed by the sun (or lashed by hail!), with some hilly N Downs hiking, a picnic and outdoor swimming!
The hike mostly follows a heavily wooded section of the N Downs Way, with sweeping views our reward for the stiff climb up onto the ridge. The hike indeed has several testing climbs, but is mostly on well maintained national trails.
We will stop briefly during the hike at a pub for toilets and drinks only - please bring food along for a picnic lunch.
Our end of the hike swimming and chilling destination is Guildford Lido (at ~16:30), one of the last remaining Olympic sized 1930's lidos in the UK, set in 4 acres of parkland, where the energetic can enjoy healthy outdoor activities such as volleyball, minigolf, frisbee, or of course splash in the expansive 165 x 100 foot pool, heated to a pleasant 24C (£4.80 extra admission). The pool apparently has new slides for this season too (another £2)!
After the swim, those who want to head straight home can do so (eta Waterloo 19:00), whilst the rest of us will find a suitable establishment to socialise in and take further refreshments before heading home an hour or two later.
As usual, our hike is train assisted to and from London. Our outward train departs from London Waterloo at 09:54 and is due to arrive in Dorking (Main) at 10:41. The cost, including the return train tickets (traveling as a group), is £15. The organisers will purchase the tickets for the group - please pay them in cash on the train. We will return to Waterloo on one of the four fast trains per hour from Guildford, taking ~40 minutes.
