Ukraine Crisis: Turning the Page

Join the London European Club at the Frontline Club to hear and discuss the latest developments in Ukraine. Events have been moving fast and the Frontline Club has changed the originally advertised programme.

A panel discussion will consider how, under a new leader, 'Chocolate King', Petro Poroshenko, efforts are being made to steer the country away from conflict while fighting in the east continues.

The panel will consist of: Katya Gorchinskaya, deputy editor of the Kyiv Post. She belongs to a group of journalists who investigate documents found in Mezhyhirya (YanukovychLeaks); Yevhen Fedchenko, director of the Mohyla School of Journalism and one of the founders of stopfake.org, a watchdog of Russian disinformation in the Ukraine; and Olexiy Solohubenko, news and deployments editor at BBC Global News and from 1996 to 2003, head of the Ukrainian Service.

Tickets:

Please RSVP only AFTER you have purchased your ticket from the Frontline Club. Please buy your ticket here:  http://www.frontlineclub.com/ukraine-crisis-turning-the-page-and-shaping-the-narrative/.

The cost of the ticket is £10 if you apply the  discount code offered only to LEC members which is LEC280514. Our "no show" policy applies to this as well as all other events.

We will meet after the event as a group to discuss the issues over a drink.

Great to see you everyone and thank you Liam for organizing.

An interesting debate about identity. What makes people part of the same country? Is it language, culture, history, political beliefs or just the will to live together?

Great to get reports from people who live in Ukraine. I also wanted to find out what I can do here in England to support the Ukrainian indepence.

Thanks was a great to be a part of such an interesting debate...(I'm new to this group and did hang around afterwards; but I wasn't sure who was part of the group or not, and didn't realise there was a pub visit, so sorry I missed you! :-))

Hi Jules, I'm glad you enjoyed the debate. Sorry we missed you afterwards, we waited outside the Frontline for a while for anyone else to emerge. Hope to see you at another event soon.

A passionate, raw debate and interesting insight into events in Ukraine and the challenges of knowing the facts in the propaganda war. Thanks to those who made it despite the attractions of the football. I think we were well rewarded. Thanks too for the great discussions in the pub after.

Thanks for organising this Meetup, Liam. It was a fascinating debate and I would have liked to have met with others in the group to discuss the points it raised but didn't know anyone and where exactly to find you.
I thought there was one major omission in the debate, namely the impact the crisis in Ukraine is having on other countries in CEE, especially the Baltic Republics and Poland.

Hi Liam, thank you for organizing this event. I decided not to attend it. I am from the eastern Ukraine, and it is very painful for me to be there knowing that people on the both sides of the barricades are being killed every day. The situation is very hard: the society is extremely polarized, the country is almost bankrupt, corruption at all levels. If to take into account the historical background (Ukraine was created rather artificially), it becomes clear that there are no simple solutions to the problem. Those who are interested to understand the point of view not presented properly in the Western media, can read the blog written by an English-Russian-Ukrainian actress and writer Vera Graziadei http://veragraziadei.wordpress.com/ .

I hope that all of you find the event useful and enjoy the evening.

Hi Olga, thank you for your comments and link to the blog. It is a shame you can't come. I'm sure you could contribute very valuably to the debate and help enlighten us about what is really happening, but Im sure this topic must be very painful for you. The blog looks very revealing, I hope we may get an opportunity to discuss it tonight.

Regretfully, I won't be able to make it this time. You all enjoy the evening, which I am sure will be as insightful as the previous one! This club is definitely worth keeping on the radar. :)
