Universities Week After Hours - Science at the Natural History Museum

The National History Museum hosts the Universities Week in June where "university staff and students and Museum researchers will lead inspiring discussions and activities that focus on cutting edge research and its role in tackling society's biggest challenges."

While most of the events take place during the day, there is a late session on Wednesday with lots of talks and interactive research stations. Among many more talks and events you will be able to enjoy

City University: The Multi-sensory Internet
Send a smell with your smartphone, experience a remote hug, and taste a digital lollipop.

University of Liverpool: Genomics in action
Find out how deciphering the genetic code of wheat could help combat global food shortages.

Middlesex University: Happy Feet
Watch yourself as a 3D skeleton, running in a virtual environment. Take-home footage available

Oxford University: Mapping the Internet
Discover the hidden patterns and social quirks revealed by the data you generate online.

University of Central Lancashire: Spot the Liar
Join an interactive examination of some high profile lies. Prof Dawn Archer will show you how to spot body language cues and emotional giveaways.

Anglia Ruskin University: Future of Music
Discover new musical instruments and the technology behind good and bad quality sound.

plus lots of other interesting talks and demonstrations and interactive stations.

There won't be an official start or end time for this meetup. There won't be an official meetup in a pub afterwards either. There is a cafe inside the museum, where you can get food and drinks.

The "After Hours" event will take place from 6pm till 10 pm, with talks and events spread throughout the evening. When you arrive, just join the crowd and try to find other members of the European club.

If you want, we can meet at 6pm in the entrance hall of the museum. I will be waving a meetup sign. I'll send you my mobile number later by email. After we have met, just grab a friend and explore what is on offer.

See you at the museum :-)

Thank you Henning -Very well spent evening talking with some of the world's leading researchers!
I tried the taste stimulator putting the metal tweezers between the tip of my tongue. After about 10 seconds I finally got a sour taste as intended ( actually rather more metallic than sour!). However, I thought the SMELL Simulator attached to a mobile phone transmitting smells over the phone was MUCH better. It was easy to detect the smell of caramel over the mobile phone which was really impressive.
Enjoyed Hull University "Liquid Crystals & LCD's Butterflies to iPads" . Had no idea UK Government holds Patent on LCD technology after funding Hull's leading research into commercialisation of Liquid Crystals at Hull University. Also amazing to meet a leading Academic Researcher who had worked with the founder of a little electronics company in the 1970's "Racal Electronics" which grew and grew. It is now called one of the biggest players in the mobile phone market-Vodafone!

It was really great, interesting. Future of music, the carnival of lost emotions and the walk holding the hands from a very cute robot, they just blew me away.
    Thanks Henning.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
