Debate - are we freer after the fall of the Wall?

It is almost 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall transformed contemporary Europe.

25 years later (or 25 years minus 4 months), Index on Censorship and the Goethe Institute are hosting a debate to ask whether any of us are truly freer now?

Debating this question will be Martin Roth, director of the V&A and former director of Dresden State Art Collections, David Edgar, political playwright, Kate Maltby of Bright Blue and The Daily Telegraph, and Sebastian Borger, German author and journalist; with Rachael Jolley, editor of Index on Censorship magazine in the chair.

The event will also launch the summer issue of Index on Censorship's magazine.

The discussion will be in English and is free to attend, and includes a free summer drinks reception on the beautiful terrace of the Goethe-Institut.

I enjoyed this talk, though I am not clear if it came to a point - it was short and discursive; but the hosts provided a pleasant environment. Thanks, Liam.

An interesting discussion. For me, David Edgar's comments on the breakdown of the alliance between the intelligentsia and the poor were especially incisive. Also great to learn something about Index on Censorship and get a copy of their impressive magazine! Thanks to everyone who came and shared their ideas over drinks afterwards.

I'm not actually feeling that great as I haven't been able to sleep the last two nights, so as this is over-subscribed, if anyone would like my ticket, please email me on [masked] and I'll email you my ticket. First one to email me will get the ticket of course :).

It's a shame some have not been able to get tickets. If anyone with a ticket can't make it tonight, there are others who'd love to use your ticket. And please update your RSVP!

Do we meet up together prior to the event starting as a group or do we just head straight in to grab a seat , i have never done one of these before so this is all new to me :)
