Lymington - Christchurch Coastal Hike, Swimming & Picnic (25km, 15 miles)

This hike is based on one of our most memorable LEC hikes so far last July.

As usual, we will travel by train, but this will be an early start to make the most of the day.  Meet me BEFORE 08:15 under the clock by Platforms 11-12 in the centre of Waterloo's mainline concourse to sort out tickets. We will catch the 08:35 to Lymington Town, due at 10:20.

This hike will follow a very varied and historic stretch of coast, taking in salt marshes, expansive sand and shingle beaches, low cliffs, fine views over the Isle of Wight & several castles.  In addition, we will have no less than three planned stops!

1) At the start of the hike in Lymington, an hour to either splash and frolic in the UK's oldest surviving outdoor pool, or to chill with coffee, ice cream and shopping in this twee town.

2) A lunchtime picnic on the beach, where there will also be the option for beach games and swimming!  It is particularly encouraged to share food!

3) At the legendary High Cliff mud spa, with an alternative option of a nearby pub.

In between, we will also do a reasonably paced hike of 15 miles or so with the exciting intention to use two ferries en route if possible.

Due to the ambitious agenda, we will be unlikely to finish the hike before 19:00 in Christchurch and thus will not get back to London until at least 21:00.

The cost to include the guided and backmarked hike, plus the return train fares and ferries from Keyhaven - Hurst Castle & at Mudeford is £25.  Please pay the hike leader in cash on the train.

The walking pace will be moderate and the terrain is only gently undulating, but the hike is relatively long, includes some shingle sections and is very exposed, so an adequate level of fitness and suitable clothing / footwear are required to enjoy the trip.

Whatever else, don't dare forget your swimming kit!!

Changing your RSVP in the last 24 hours prior to the event is strongly discouraged.

A classic coastal swim with a bit of a walk thrown in for good measure! The cloudy weather also had the positive result of averting the sunburn of last year and deterred the naturists for good measure!

Wonderful day! I loved the drama of the windswept clifs and the low dark clouds. I agree with Andy, fast trains are over rated. Playing chinese whispers on the carriage with random passengers was v.funny. "what happens with Mike stays with Mike" :-)

Where are we supposed to return to London from? After the hike do we go back to Lymington?

    • Andy

We will get a train directly back to London after the hike from Christchurch, which does not call at Lymington.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
