Let's discover Sicily! A sunny escape to the Mediterranean Sea

Buongiorno lovely London Europeans!

Join us for a sunny escape to Sicily, a place full of history. Colonised by the Greeks, the Romans, the Phoenicians, the Arabs, the Normands, Sicily offers a lot to to see and taste.. beautiful beaches, great wine and food, and also a volcano for those who love wild natural landscapes..

The planned date for the trip is on the first dark and gloomy weekend in England with the new Winter British Time (shorter days) so it would be great to get away for more sun light and to stock up on fresh Mediterranean food ;-)

We will visit the pearls of the Mediterranean Sea, the greek colonies of Siracusa and Taormina and the unique mosaic of cultures that is Sicily's capital city: Palermo

The price is £199, incl. four nights accomodation in shared room with breakfast and guided tour by myself. Flights and local transport excluded. You will have to purchase flights directly here: www.easyjet.com

Please purchase your flights before RSVP

UPDATED: due to maintenance work at Catania airport, Easyjet has changed all our flights to Palermo. This is the new itinerary

Fantastic! Penny was a wonderful host and guide through her homeland. We covered Palermo, Taormina and Siracusa on this trip. With local knowledge of the area, places of interest and especially local cuisine, we were spoilt for choice. Thanks to everyone who made this trip wonderful. Love you guys:)

The London European Club is more a group of friends to me than "just another meetup" and so I miss you guys! Showing my country to other Europeans was so rewarding. I loved Maja's expression of delighted disbelief when wondering around the Normand Chapel! Priceless! Guys please leave your feedback so next time I know what to make better! xx See you soon around in London and thanks for a wonderful time

I felt like a true Sicilian at the end of the trip. Stopping traffic with a smile, conversing with hands more than words and enjoying coffee in the sun. Thanks to our great, funny and helpful group and especially to Penny for organising cosa nostra style and letting me make beautiful memories. :)

Life-threatening street traffic, intoxicating nightlife in the wilderness of Palermo's old town, epic journeys on state-of-the-art Sicilian railways, tourist mecca/trap of Taormina, impossible to find urban beach in Siracusa - this island has surely got something for everyone... More honestly, the multi-layered history and culture expressed in a mind-boggling architectural and gastronomic diversity plus street markets, exotic vegetation, irresistible climate, great organisation and company made it a truly unforgettable experience. Thanks Penny and looking forward to more of it!

I left with strangers, but returned with friends....
I saw this trip a while ago and thought to myself "Join Meetup & book it! It will be amazing!"
I had never travelled with a group before, but have loved Italy since my childhood. I had hoped to get to know everyone beforehand, but disappointing experiences at other Meetup groups left me questioning my wisdom, so I turned up at Gatwick without ever having met anyone in the "Club". I was sat near the front of the plane and had a great chat with a guy from Messina and that really set the tone for the whole trip. I found myself with a group of diverse personalities and characters and in Seamus, I had the ideal roommate. I returned after having a lot of laughs, great food such as Swordfish Carpaccio, Lemon Sorbet - simply divine!, witnessed man-made magnificence in the Palatine Chapel in Palermo, the charm of Taormina, the sights & smells of the markets, Siracusa's great history... A wonderful experience and grazie a tutti, Penny! :)

I loved Sicily, amazing history and excellent ice cream, which is my favourite combination. Seeing how what was once pretty much the center of the civilised world turned into a place run by mobsters is a great lesson. And throughout time the vulcano keeps on doing its' thing. Penny was a wonderful host, my favourite bit was to imagine her as a scoolgirl on the backdrop of Siracusa.

Hi intrepid explorers! 3 of us (Lisa, Matt and I) are going to get the 09:54 First Capital Connect train from St. Pancras to Gatwick, arriving at 10:56 on a Group Saver, which means there would be space for a 4th person to share it and benefit from savings compared to Gatwick Express etc. It costs £19.65 for 3 or 4 people, so that's pretty cheap, but of course there is the trade off of it being slow compared to other methods. Please only reply if you will definitely want to join us and can be in plenty of time for us to buy ticket etc, say meeting at 09:30ish.

Weather forecast Saturday - 24 degrees, Sunday - 25 degrees with 35% probability of thunder & lightning. You might want to bring a light rain jacket.

    1 · November 6, 2012

    • Daniela Di G.

It hardly ever rains in Siracusa as it is at the feet of Etna so nice microclima sheltered from clouds (If it rains, it rains on the vulcano or in Taormina).. When it rained, we took holiday from school so that all kids could enjoy the rain properly and happily splash around ;-)

      November 6, 2012

    • Marion

Meant to say I looked up Palermo.

      November 6, 2012

  • Maja

    Shall we take swimming suits?

    November 5, 2012

    • Marion

I'll pack mine. Better safe than sorry.

      November 6, 2012

    • Lisa

I'm wondering...do any of the places we're staying have a pool? Not sure i'd want to swim in the sea unless it was hot and temperature forecast is falling.

      November 6, 2012

  • Daniela Di G.

Little mood booster for you guys, 26C was today s temperature in my hometown and it s supposed to stay warm, yeeeey!! http://www.ilmeteo.it/meteo/Siracusa
@ Lisa: about 60- 65 approx, pls keep receit as apparently Easyjet will reimburse Palermo-Catania £25 and Catania Palermo £25
@ Maja, trainers should be perfectly ok, as the archeological sites are uneven ground but not too difficult (a bit like in Pompei)
See you Saturday, pack sunglasses ;-)))

Hi Penny, please could you give us an idea of local transport costs? Thanks.

Hi Penny, sorry for bothering you yesterday - I messed up by looking at flights to Palermo as somewhat brain-dead after tough day at work! Have booked the correct flights to Catania now and looking forward to meeting you and everyone else and la dolce vita in Sicily. Hope your sailing is going well!

    1 · July 19, 2012

  • Daniela Di G.

Hi Tony I am away sailing, will be able to look into this in one week. Perhaps Marcello can help you? He is Italian and may know.. Sorry very limited Internet here :(((

Hi Penny, I'm thinking about coming on your lovely sounding trip - have the flights changed times Easyjet time is 13:55 on Sat 10th Nov and they don't appear to fly on Wednesdays, so the next is on Thu 15th Nov at 18:20. Have I got something muddle up? Thanks in advance for clarification, Tony

    July 18, 2012

  • Marcello

    Just booked my flight:
same as everybody on the way out, return:
Palermo (Sicily) to London Gatwick (South Terminal)
    Dep 17 November[masked]:25
    Arr 17 November[masked]:25
    Flight 5246
More convenient than Ryanair because lands in Gatwick :)

    July 14, 2012

  • Maja

PLEASE don't RSVP for this trip unless you have bought your flights. You can meet me at various events and ask me about it, but only people who are serious about going should RSVP.

Oh this is a dream of a trip. Sicily has always been at the top of my must go destinations and I still have never been. I'd love to join you on this trip especially since I started my italian course yesterday. But I'll be away already around that time (camping in the australian outback on the 10th) so hopefully there will be another Sicily trip at some point..:). Thanks for your encouragement Penny, with you Sicily would be twice as nice I'm sure ;))

Will it be warm enough for swimming?

    1 · July 12, 2012

  • Daniela Di G.

Marcello, there is a Ryanair flight from Palermo to Stansted on Saturday the 17th for £50

    July 11, 2012

  • Marcello

I've been in Sicily several times but never visited its biggest city, Palermo.
I plan to stop a couple of days more and hopefully fly from Trapani, but still have to do my research.
