SOLD OUT FOR THIS YEAR!! : )

At a crossroad in the Mediterranean, Sardinia’s turquoise sea and white sandy beaches rival the tropics, it's red wine inebriates you and its gourmet food is highly aphrodisiac.

We will explore the south-west of this gorgeous island, renown for its natural beauty and rich historical heritage, inhabited since the Neolitic age and colonised in turn by Phoenicians, Carthaginensis, Romans, Pisans and Spanish.

Flights: Easyjet from London Stansted to Cagliari, 6.30 am

A nap on the plane and off to enjoy the day to the full - starting with a double espresso at the arrivals!

The return is on Monday morning, 10.50am.

What to expect:

We will...

- drive along the dramatic coastline from Pula to Capo Malfatano & beyond (photogenic views)

- have a guided tour of the limestone caves (Is Zuddas)

- explore the archeological town of Nora

- climb the Spanish watchtowers & run across the windswept dunes of Chia

- discover the medieval centre of Cagliari

- trek in the WWF natural reserve (routes from 3 to 21km)

... and, of course, test the local food & wines.

For the bravest of us, there will be opportunities to dive in the crystal clear waters and do some snorkelling too. In fact, we will be staying in a small coastal town, 20minutes walk away from a beautiful sandy beach. From there we will drive and walk to the various sites (from 30min to 2h drive away).

Chia's beach

One day before the flight back, we'll head to Cagliari, dump the luggage and climb to the top of the fortified 'Castello' quarter, to admire the ancient buildings and stunning views, while sipping aperitifs 'al fresco'.

Plenty of walking involved, so at the end of the day you'll be able to tuck in a huge bowl of handmade ice-cream, totally guilt-free.

Transport: we'll drive from town to town in a minivan and walk around in Cagliari.

(appetisers)

Blimey, no wonder we were knackered as you say! Great sense of achievement amongst the aching limbs at the end of it!

For those who had asked - the total length of our hike in the Natural Reserve (considering the gate were we left the vehicles as the starting point) was of about 20km, and not 7 as the staff had told us. No wonder we were knackered by the end of it! the max altitude was around 500m
We made it in less than 6h (which included a 20min sandwich break and a bit of to and fro where the signals were missing), pretty good.

Great bunch of people who made the most of a less-than-perfect weather and of the local cuisine! You all contributed to the success of this manic holiday, thank you from my heart. ...by the way, where's Andrea?

    Great trip!
Really enjoyed all of it, company sights and food. Weather wasn't perfect but good enough to enjoy myself.
    Thanks Tiziana!

Many, many thanks to Tiziana for organising such a memorable trip with so many fascinating things to see and to Marcello with all his advice on food and wine, and the new friends made. The walk in the national park was a real highlight for me too, amongst many other great memories including Brian, Marcello and Tiziana throwing caution to the wind and entering the chilly April Med!

May there be more trips like this one, where people share a great experience, learn more about a new place and each other, about culture, politics and food. That was always the idea, but Tiziana executed it to perfection. Her and Marcello's hospitality made this trip very special and everyone who came along made it unique and unforgettable.

I miss the hospitality of the people in Sardinia and everyone who came along and made this trip enjoyable and fun. I echo the gratitude to our wonderful host and (in-house) culinary expert. In my mind, two words perfectly summarise this trip - "suckling pig".

It was our greatest day, that hike in the National Park.Up the mountain and working our way along its lengthy ridge.Even though it was poorly marked it would not stop us but only add to our adventure. For we had the great wit of Brian and Ibrahim to push us along the trail. Then came the Descent and there was a sniff of fear amongst some of the group for they lost faith in us reaching home, but they were wrong because as we made it through the dense forest the path back to base was again found and there he was with welcoming arms Marcello.
Then every evening as we made it to a Ristorante of choice it was he again Marcello translating the long lists of culinary dishes and giving great descriptions so we knew what we would later eat.
I shall say this,a special thankyou from my heart to she who is Tiziana who worked day and night to make comfortable all those who made that trip to Sardinia in the year of Two Thousand and Thirteen

I mean, at what time will you be at the airport ?
I'm tempted to take the very earliest coach to stansted.

    Flight booked. Yippee!

    December 22, 2012

  • Tiziana

    I'll be on these flights:
24 April 6.30am from Stanstead (arrival in Cagliari 10.15)
29 April 10.50am from Cagliari (arrival Stansted 12.35)

A quick note about food - restaurants can be outrageously expensive in Sardinia, but at 5min walk from our hotel, in Pula, there's a supermarket with an outstanding charcuterie counter which is a blessing for packed lunches (read: pecorino, olives, prosciutto, salami, sundried tomatoes, fresh mozzarellas, ...)

    December 18, 2012

  • Richard

Flight booked - can't wait! Always wanted to see Sardinia.
