Personally I'd be very careful about putting this map as a meetup photo.

Sorry to hear that Bryan but we do accept everyone in the Club as long as they are interested in European issues.

The picture is a great way to start the European debate, personally, I think there's an element in truth in it :)

We have started the debate in August 2010 Ray, do come along and join it.

As a German I'm rather offended about calling the Balearic Islands "The British Isles". We already call Mallorca our "17th Bundesland (State)"! And more Bratwurst is sold on Mallorca than Pies!

Ha ha ha, I just saw this comment Dennis. Well i have been eating yogurt since I was half a year old only to come to England and find out that it's "greek style". I of course refuse to eat "greek style" yogurt on principle and eat the same stuff produced by Turks from Germany. For all those who appreciate yogurt, I recommend Rezet!

I don't feel I need to explain anything, but I am glad the map is a point of debate as the European Club is a place for debate. As for sense of humour -no comment, except as it is as individual as eye colour or IQ.

Explanation: Western Europe is full of immigrants! (nothing wrong with that). Offence isn't caused but perceived, that's a matter of character. Which HQ in which states will get a report btw? Anyway, Maja can I suggest to rename Italy the "Bunga Bunga Banana Republic"?

The 2nd world war?? Oh no, I almost forgot! Thanks for reminding! Now that's a dirty spot on a human rights record, isn't it ;)

Spanish Baleares should be renamed as "German isles" not british ;)

  • Dennis

Thanks Jorge, good man! ;)) On a serious note, to all those who really take offence because of the map of Europe shown above; I assume it is a map created by a russian guy called Yanko Svetkov who created a whole book with such maps called "The Atlas of Prejudice". It includes maps showing the world from different perspectives highlighting stereotypes that exist in peoples minds. http://www.atlasofprejudice.com/

To Dennis: when you said "Western Europe is full of immigrants! (nothing wrong with that)" what to you mean? Which immigrants are you referring to?

    or cancel

  • Dennis

Hi Riccardo, I don't know, people from all parts of the world I guess. Germans in the UK for example :)

  • Riccardo Pusceddu

I see. If you equate Germans in the UK to other citizen from outside Europe then I utterly disagree with you. There is plenty of wrong with the latter especially with this rate of immigration. If that weren't the case then either this group should be called London Planetary Meetup or perhaps you've chosen the wrong group. Or perhaps that's me who have chosen the wrong group.

Erm...I am a bit bewildered by the tone and content of your comment. I'm not sure I quite get you but do I understand correctly that you try to push a point about in your view too much immigration from outside Europe, the first time you contact me? If that is so and that issue so urgent under your surface may I suggest you may indeed be in the wrong group? I don't see myself in the position or have the desire to criticize or moan about anyone who changed location, from wherever to wherever. This group is about meeting people not complaining about any. Scale and frame of immigration can always be discussed but in good spirit. I hope that describes you.

yes you've understood well. In trying to understand the position of the members of this meet up group I red all the comments to see if I could find a position similar to my one or different to mine. So I found yours but wasn't sure 100% about what you meant hence asked you to clarify. Now it seems that the 2 of us have very different ideas about immigration although I don't know the extent of your position when you say immigration can be discussed but in good spirit. I totally agree about the good spirit but I'm more interested to know if the majority of the members of this group think the same as you. So I invite comments from other members either in accordance with me or not

Boys!! Meetup is for meeting up. If you want to discuss anything we have over 20 meetups per month, get togethet and discuss. London European Club is run by volunteers and we don't have moderators so I strongly discourage (meaning delete) these sort of "debates". It is OK to have different oppinions and I can tell you that with almost 4000 members also people in this group think differently. So please don't "invite" comments. Either come to a meetup and discuss or start a meetup where you will do the moderation. Thank you!

  • Riccardo Pusceddu

Sorry, I started it all so I apologise. I didn't know that you needed a moderator because I think I can moderate myself anyway (to you to decide if I succeeded in that in this occasion). I just wanted to see if I chose the right group before coming to a meet up. I understand however that this subject is very delicate and prone to degenerate into outright racism. I'll be coming to a meet up and seek for similar people as myself in person (and maybe will have a courteous debate with Dennis to see if we have some common thoughts or perhaps we can learn something new from each other)

What have I done again??!! Mercy!

Thank you, yes for a proper debate online a moderator is a must. As we can't pay for one (this is a free voluntary group) I encourage members to come and see if the group suits them or not. That is why we have over 20 events per month. I also welcome people who want to organize debates. So all very open and highly organized, but lets keep the level high. And lets stick to the point of Meetup and meet up. Thanks!

don't worry Dennis, it was me that started all as I didn't know what I could and I couldn't ask/write/debate so I spoke my mind up. The issue of immigration is very delicate so I'll have to follow yours policy as outlined by Maja. To Maja: where can I find the "point of Meetup" so that I won't break the rules anymore?

It is in the name Riccardo. The clue is in the name.
