7.30pm Talk by Andrew Harper: Exploring Australia’s Great Arid Wilderness
Andrew Harper has been walking and exploring the Australian deserts since 1995 and has journeyed over 15000 kilometres across all of the continents major deserts either as a solo explorer or as leader of commercial & scientific camel expeditions.
In 1999 he brought to fruition a 17-year dream of walking across Australia along the Tropic of Capricorn, a 229 day, 4637 kilometre journey raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Then followed a 720km, 35 day, 2 man expedition across the Tanami Desert to link the routes of 19th Century explorers John Stuart and Augustus Gregory.
Most recently he has founded a not-for-profit environmental organisation that conducts scientific and ecological surveys in remote desert regions, and coupled with the ecotourism sector, encourages people to get involved in discovering and documenting the extraordinary diversity of the arid zone.
An RGS Fellow, his latest solo journey was reconnXpedition2012, a 35 day, 700 kilometre crossing of the Simpson Desert, the world’s largest parallel sand-ridge desert. Linked to Education Through Expeditions and Adventurers & Scientists for Conservation, he conducted an extensive ground-truthing project for Sydney University, following the widespread summer bushfires.
Andrew relates how his experiences of desert travel, which began as ‘walking away from modern life’, have morphed into walking with a purpose, adapting the 150 year heritage of 19th Century desert exploration for the benefit of 21st Century desert knowledge.
