Change of plan due to the weather, so visiting the museum of London Docklands instead; then drinks afterwards; See Meeting and transport at the bottom.....
This walk takes in a great collection of historical features skirting the north bank of the Thames around the former dockland areas of Wapping, Shadwell, Limehouse, and Canary Wharf.
Starting from Tower Hill the walk finishes at Canary Wharf using a mixture of the Thames Path and small roads and lanes around the former dock basins. It is intended to visit the excellent Museum of London Dockland at the end.
Wapping was a hub area of the former London docklands and still contains many wharfs and former dockland features; it went into decline after the Second World War and in the 1980s was developed into flats and businesses.
In the 1980s a strike developed following the move of the UK Newspaper industry from Fleet Street to Wapping, caused by various factors including technological changes. Nicknamed Fortress Wapping, the area has more recently become associated with the former HQ of News International following its closure after the phone hacking revelations of 2009; we will pass this building en-route.
Some of the many historical sights we pass include St Katherine Docks, Wapping Old Stairs (convicts were left here after execution in the 18th century), Tobacco Dock (Grade 1 listed and former store for tobacco and later sheepskins and furs), Limehouse Basin (built in 1812 and a hub for the Regent’s Canal), Canary Wharf and the West India Docks once part of the busiest port in the world but more recently a major world financial centre.
Although not a full guided tour walk, I will be pointing out some historical sights and giving out a walk feature leaflet.
Bring water and a snack lunch, we will have a pub stop after the museum at the end. This walk should finish at about 4.15pm; however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).
Meeting and Transport:
Everyone. The Weather for tomorrow is forecast for heavy rain for a large part of the day, so I feel it would be better to cancel the walk. However I thought we could go to the museum of Docklands (http://www.museumoflondon.org.u...), it closes at 6pm. Meet outside the museum for 3.30pm. Later we can go to a local pub for a drink and perhaps some food.
Underground: Tower Hill underground station.
Please check Transport for London.
