Walk length 11 miles (approx)
This walk takes in a great deal of interesting suburban parks and woods with various historical features including the site of the famous Crystal Palace. Starting from Streatham station this is a linear walk finishing at Forest Hill station.
The Crystal Palace of 1851
The first part of the walk goes through Streatham Common, Norwood Grove, Biggin Wood before getting to Crystal Palace Park, Sydenham, Dulwich village and Park and then Forest Hill.
Biggin Wood, Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood along the route are some of the last remains of the Great North Wood an Oak Forest that stretched from the edge of central London to almost Croydon.
Views from Norwood Grove
Crystal Palace Park was used as a pleasure ground during Victorian times and now contains the remains of the Crystal Palace Gardens and the site of the Crystal Palace a cast-iron and glass building that was reconstructed on the site and sub sequentially burnt down in 1936. It originally stood at Hyde Park and formed the focus of the great exhibition of 1851.
Some of the Crystal Palace Park dinosaurs
Some interesting features of Crystal Palace Park include a number of life-sized dinosaur sculptures made in the 1850s, but now considered largely inaccurate; they were restored in 2002 and are Grade I listed.
Although not a full guided tour walk, I will be pointing out some historical sights and giving out a walk feature leaflet. There are also a number of free museums we may visit including the Crystal Palace Museum and the Horniman Museum.
Lunch & Finish: Bring water and a packed lunch. This walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a 30min lunch stop, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography). We will probably have a pub stop at the end of the walk which will probably be The Capitol (old converted 1920s cinema) and now a Wetherspoons Pub near Forest Hill station.
Meeting: Meet outside Streatham Rail station for 10.30am.
