As we're officially all fans of folk music, I feel it's my duty to
keep you informed of opportunities for learning and playing folk music in
For those looking for a group class in folk music, (in addition to the fantastic
Cecil Sharp House), a folk school called the Trad Academy has recently opened and
runs sessions in Kings Cross and Hackney, and various one day classes as well
(including one on sea shanties...)
The classes are aimed at those who already play their instruments, and are open
to players of any instrument capable of playing tunes in the keys of G and D.
Teaching is by ear, so no music reading is necessary. One of the tutors is Ed
Hicks, who takes classes at EFDSS at Cecil Sharp House, and is my old banjo
teacher. He's a really enthusiastic, inclusive folk musician and a great
teacher, so the classes should be pretty good.
I'll be heading down on Tuesday to the folk class at the Harrison in Kings
Cross, and will definitely be signing up for the one day class in Sea Shanties!!
Looks like a great ensemble class, any type of instrument is welcome and you can
pay per session or per term. Let me know if anyone fancies joining me on Tuesday
or check out the site here: http://www.tradacademy.co.uk/courses.html
There's loads on offer, including fiddle classes, folk dancing, Swedish
gammeldans, folk accompaniment and more.
Hope that's helpful,
