So, we could be treated to more Vampire Transhumanists

To be clear, that combination is not one of my priorities.

the model for modern day Cryonicists

Some interesting recent news from Cryonics: Max More (who spoke at H+UK 2010) has been appointed as the new CEO of Alcor, effective 1 Jan, 2011. To my mind, Max is an inspired choice to improve both the organisational maturity and the public presence of cryonics. The task ahead of him is large, but he is capable, and I wish him well.

I hate to defend David - but I am pretty sure he was UNAWARE of the vampire links - Styles pulled the wool over a lot of peoples eyes - I am sure hes a suprised as I was to find that out.
However that being said a lot of people in the cryonics circles are pretty annoyed about this and are trying to clean up their act. Its a shame that Styles has wrecked his credibility by immature handling of his cult affiliations and lying about it. But hes a young guy and I hear he has a new family to care about prehaps looking after them will bring him back to reality. I hear that other Previous Speaker Shannon Vyff has been helping out the people involved in the Cryogirl Scandal as well.

Regulation and real scientists doing it instead of cult members is needed and I don;t think Max More is the right guy either.

Max More being aggressive on US TV defending his cryonics beliefs : http://www.youtube.co... AND http://www.youtube.co... -

He started the Extropian cult and has been involved with alcor since they were Mizar - so his "appointment" to CEO came as no suprise - http://www.reference.... AND http://www.sfbg.com/3... and http://www.theregiste...

interestingly - i use Dr Max More as a avatar when i play a nuclear war game! I am sure Max is probably a well meaning guy if a bit fanatical for my tastes but I am sure theres a "evil scientist" element about him. His name sounds like a Bond Villian - Max More whats that supposed to mean More of the Maximum you have to admit its a pretty egotistical name!

And on the idea that technology is getting faster and faster - well I think this guy Regis McKenna has a lot to answer for on this. You may not know that Apple was actually HIS marketingcreation (logo, PC, Oyster shell laptop) - they would still be selling kits from a garage if he hadnt' worked his magic. He explains this in the now out of print "the Regis Touch" and he rejuvinated Intel from a Military Supplier to the company we know today. If it was'nt for his Marketing skills in the 1980's Many Silicon Valley companies may well of gone bankrupt and we would be buying Japanese made microchips.

Steve Blank also finds out some amazing stuff about the history of silicon valley's early days http://steveblank.com...

I think Bob Seidensticker's spotlight model is a better explantion for technology change than exponential growth - he reserched technology change for microsoft. http://www.bkconnecti...

Greg Fish at http://worldofweirdth... is probably the best singularity skeptic blogger - who works on AI reserch amongst other futuristic things.

If you could get a guy's like this to do a presentation I bet he would know some stuff that would suprise us. Sometimes to look into the future you need only to look into the past.

Richie - you have an interesting set of links there. I don't have time to click on them all just now but I did take a look at the Max More videos

We may have to agree to disagree here. Max expresses himself strongly but what he says hangs together well in my view. The other speaker makes some good points too but I am on Max's side when Max points out that some of what the other speaker says is unwarranted analogy. Max speaks fast but the content is good.

Max is also careful to limit what he claims on behalf of Ted Williams. It is unfortunate that some aspects of that case have come to dominate some of the public discussion of cryonics.

I haven't looked at these links yet, but my own understanding is that many people were involved in the marketing success of Apple, Intel, et al.

Finally (for now), on the idea that technology is getting faster and faster - I'm sure uber-scientist John von Neumann talked about this well before Regis McKenna came on the scene.

Prehaps Dr More can explain this?

An anagram (If you swap all the letters and add some as well) for Al-queda is The Extropy Institute!

I also have it on pretty good authority (David Icke) that he can also shapeshift into a reptilian and has a secret UFO base on the dark side of the moon.

biggrin

Happy New Year everyone

Even though there's a big smiley, I think this post is in particularly poor taste

Al-queda is an entirely despicable, backwards-looking, intolerant, murderous, oppressive, female-emancipation-hating organisation

Comparing an organisation like the Extropy Institute to Al-queda is akin to spoilt young students with no real knowledge of history comparing modern mainstream European political parties to Adolf Hitler's Nazis (a comparison I heard a lot while a student myself in the early 1980s)

lol

what about Bert from Sesame Street - http://www.bertisevil... where i cut and paste that image from.

Come on I bet even max would see the funny side - My brothers got pics of him with hitler and saddam on his facebook page he bought them at a photo editing stall at the funfair.

More is public figure and as he has stepped up as Alcors CEO he is going to get a lot worse than my silly jokes.

this singularity better not happen I am sure you guys also plan on engineering out the sense of humour

Personally I'm a big fan of humour, including political satire, such as Spitting Image and Rory Bremner

But some kinds of humour go beyond the pale - such as homophobic humour or racist humour

To end on a more positive note: It's an interesting question as to what kinds of things will make computers genuinely laugh

Seriously I was only joking about Max More being a bond villian but it seems that others also have things to say about him.

But others have things to say about Alcor's Max More, Luciferianism and Pedophilia

Transhumanism and "Plan 9 from Outer Space" collide.

I guess this is one of those unforseen events that Transhumans sometime talk about (or unknown unknowns, as Donald Rumsfeld might say).

The Pedophilia article - which Max seems to have written nearly 30 years ago, in 1981, at the age of just 17, is deeply unpleasant, and I hope that Max strongly distances his present day thinking from what he thought at that time.

The Luciferian article is much more interesting: it's an intelligent, spirited contribution to the debate between atheism and "the God of the Bible". Some of the contents prefigure what Richard Dawkins has to say in "The God Delusion". The author of cryomedical.blogspot.com seems not to have taken the time to understand it. That author also seems to think that "outing" the CEO of Alcor as an atheist will damage the Alcor cause - personally I doubt this.
