Game Development Workshop Series - Session 03

Hey guys,

This one's going to be great - We have partnered with City University to conduct this workshop at their premises and have some fantastic speakers lined up.  We are very excited about this and hoping to see you all there!

Here's the agenda for the evening:

2 PM to 2 30 PM : Build a game with Construct2 by Scirra
2 30 PM to 3 PM  : Q & A
3 PM to 3 45 PM : Your questions answered - Session with Richard Lord, CTO, Sticksports
3 45 PM to 4 PM : Break
4 PM to 5 30 PM : The Developer's guide to survive Zombie Apocalypse - by Oscar Clarke
5 30 PM to 6 PM : Q & A

Construct2 is a HTML5 game engine for windows.  It's a drag and drop game maker and anyone can create a game in no time.  Ashley from Scirra will guide us through creating a game in the first session. Please download the SDK from http://www.scirra.com/construct2 before coming to the event - that would save you a lot of time.

The second session is by Richard Lord, CTO at Stick Sports Ltd, a London based game developer with 3 very successful mobile sports games and a number of successful web games. Prior to joining Stick Sports Richard worked as a lead developer at EA and as an independent game developer. Richard is also lead developer of Ash, an open-source entity system framework for game developers and has worked with The Science Museum, The United Nations, The National Gallery, The Arts Council, BBC, The British Museum and Electronic Arts, to name a few.  In his session, he is going to take questions from the attendees and answer them. So, please email me or Gen (our co-organizer) the questions you want to ask Richard by Wednesday the 6th of February.

Oscar Clark is a consultant and Evangelist for Everyplay from Applifier.  He has had many years of experience with online, mobile and console social games and is an outspoken speaker at games conferences including GDC, Casual Connect, Game Connection and Develop on Freemium Design and Monetisation.  He has also guest lectured on Social Freemium Games Design at UCA Farnham, NFTS and University Campus Suffolk. In his session, he is going to talk about what it takes to be a successful game developer. His twitter handle is https://twitter.com/Athanateus

The evening looks packed with loads of great information for all of us.  See you all on the evening!

Cheers.

P.S. Directions for the event: The event will be held in Room AG07 of the College Building.  A map of the campus is here: http://www.city.ac.uk/visit; the College Building is Building A on the map.  The entrance to the College Building is located on St. John Street.  If you’re walking down the street, the College Building is the one with a clock on the façade.

Enjoyed the talks and took away useful information and insight. I found it to be very focussed on the business and industry side of things, a lot of information on the internal workings of how to ship the game which is useful to know.

Thanks everyone for your comments and feedback - am glad you guys found the event useful. A big thanks to our speakers. And I can't thank Greg enough for all the hard work he put in to make this happen.
See you guys in our next one!

Good to meet everyone today... I hope my presentation was useful. If you want to know more about Freemium or Social game Design or the free Everyplay game recording SDK let me know @Athanateus

See you all this afternoon! Please make a note of the directions to the event (see the bottom of the event description).

Another reminder --> If you RSVP'd YES and you know for sure you can't make it anymore this Saturday, February 9, please update your RSVP, so other people can get in. Thanks!

  • Carl B.

I've decided to drop out of the session, just too much of rush. CU next time... or at the Hack.

    February 6, 2013

    • Huda M.

Now I have to ask. Which Hack? I've been out of touch lately...

      February 7, 2013

    • Carl B.

This one http://www.eventbrite.... Sold out now. I did post in the LinkedIn MSc group but LinkedIn is **** and hid it.

      February 7, 2013

  • Rich P.

Is the Construct2 a "hands on session"?
I ask because I don't own a windows computer and Construct2 tool is windows only.

    February 4, 2013

    • Rich P.

Would I still benefit from these sessions or would it be better for me to in-RSVP and let somebody take my place.

      February 4, 2013

    • Prathap

Hi Rich, the other sessions are going to be great too - you will get a lot of industry insight from those sessions. If your only objective is to learn a SDK, then the other 2 sessions might not be of interest to you.

      February 4, 2013

  • Gen A.

If you RSVP'd YES and you know for sure you can't make it anymore this Saturday, February 9, please update your RSVP, so other people can get in. Thanks!

  • Kathryn N.

    Super excited for this meetup!
Just a quick question: there are tutorials on the Construct2 website ~ should I avoid them or is it advised to have a look before the talk?
    All the best, Kat

    February 3, 2013

    • Prathap

Hi Kat, feel free to go through the tutorials.. The session will most likely cover the same material, but prior knowledge could always be handy. Perhaps, you might have a different set of questions to ask during the Q & A session, and that could benefit everyone.

      1 · February 3, 2013

  • Gen A.

Not long to go now 'til the next Meetup! If you have not RSVP'd yet, please do so soon. See you all there!

    Hi Guys

    Any skype driven hackatons?
    Freezing out there;)

    January 18, 2013

    • Prathap

ha ha, good idea, Kat :) Perhaps we should think about hosting one!

      January 18, 2013

    • Dominique

I've found Skype's service to have deteriorated considerably since Microsoft took over. Google Hangout however is great for group hackathons, code chat.

    Hello everyone,
If anyone is interested in hearing Microsoft talk about Game Development on W8/WP8 this is a good chance: http://www.meetup.com/Cambridge-Game-Creators/events/95821602/
    Thanks

  • Carl B.

Anyone interested in forming a team for the Tiga Game Hack and bunking off for this workshop?

    January 10, 2013

    • Prathap

Carl, of course you are welcome to attend the event and get back to the Game Hack. Perhaps you could pick up a skill or two for your hack! ;) Cheers!

      1 · January 10, 2013

    • Prathap

In fact, you can find us at Game Hack on Sunday

      January 10, 2013

  • Robyn B.

What do we need to bring? Laptop presumably - anything else?

    January 10, 2013

    • Prathap

Yes. I will pass on other details like software that you could install beforehand to save time etc., during the course of the coming weeks. We are talking to a few companies who will be conducting the workshop for us, and depending on who does the workshop, I will pass on the corresponding instructions. Cheers!

      January 10, 2013

    • Robyn B.

      Lovely thanks. :-)

      January 10, 2013

  • Gen A.

We might also have recruiters turning up for this event looking for awesome app/game developers. We'll announce in the next few weeks.

    Hi,
What will this workshop will mainly be focusing on?
    Many thanks

    January 9, 2013

    • Prathap

This one will be on the basics of game programming, as we expect a lot of university students to turn up

      January 9, 2013

  • Carl B.

    Hey, my old uni!
    I second Tomasz's suggestion.

    January 9, 2013

    • Prathap

Hi Carl, Unfortunately it's too late to reschedule the event - everything has been organized at the uni's end.

Hi everyone, just a quick note to let you know about the London launch of the 2013 Dare To Be Digital student game competition - you have to be a student studying games or a related field to take part, but the event is free to attend, cheers..!

    Prathap,

There is Tiga's Game Hack on that weekend (http://tigagamehackdays2013.eventbrite.com). Also there is Hack The Tower hackathon. I propose moving the workshop one week later.

    January 9, 2013

    • Prathap

Hi Tomasz, Yes, there are other events on the same weekend. Unfortunately, we can't move the event as we have been planning this with the university for quite a while now, and changing dates will affect too many plans...
