Live character drawing for Games (with a model)

Bring your tablets, sketch pads and ipads and lets get together and draw some game art. Hosted by Robert, we will go through some basic anatomy, improvising the pose to add drama and emphasize the gestures and expressions, inking the sketch then adding color and style to the final piece for your folio.

We also discuss using Unity and some pre-production/production pipelines for game art and also what goes on at the London Indie Game Dev space.

Please bring your own sketch material.

Thanks, it was good to have a model to draw from. Would be good to have the seating circular and stronger lighting another time, but definitely good to draw from life for a change!

I like the idea of a circular arrangement, I will implement that and better lighting next time :)

Had a great time, cheers Robert! There aren't enough places where you can "character draw" rather than life draw, and Victoria the model and her costume were great. The music really helped immensely too, inspiring neon lit visions of Neuromancer and Deus Ex.

Definitely up for more character drawing in the future. Personally I much prefer the life drawing portion over the 'drawing refinement' session because it tends to be the bit that's harder to practice at home.

Also, the projector was a nice touch! It was cool seeing you work live and get the alternate view of the model. Maybe there's an idea in having a webcam feed up there too so you can see the reverse view/close ups.

Good, I liked the format. I would really like some pointers of how to improve my drawing. I do not ink any illustrations I make, so techniques for that would be really interesting.

Hi Alex, there is so many things I want to cover too so perhaps we can make it more like a workshop which will be fun, here is some inking done in illustrator to give you the idea, just skim over this one, no need to watch all of it unless you want to learn some illustrator in the process. Thanks for coming and looking forwards to seeing you in the next event! :)

Thank you everyone who went to this meetup, I see some didn't manage to make it, that's no problem, in around a fortnights time there will be another chance, although we might change the subject matter to something different each time, all game related of course.

    For anatomy practice visit: http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/

Feel free to comment with links to your images so that I can post them, I encourage you to do that so that you can look back on your improvement :)

Hi there! This is an awesome idea- i was just wondering if there are specific materials it'd be good to bring? Especially for colour and inking the sketch :)

    August 7

    • Robert R.

For inking, you just need a black pen of any kind, preferably felt, I can bring some materials such as basic pencils, some paper and there is some boards to lean on here. I can also bring some black liner pens that will suffice :)
