  • Let's make a trip to the historic town of St Albans in Hertfordshire (a short distance north of London).

Meet at 9:15am outside the National Rail Tickets office at St Pancras International train station (nearest Tube: Kings Cross St Pancras; please do not go to Kings Cross train station by mistake). I will be wearing an orange scarf, and my mobile phone number is 07984 257572.
Please pay me £30 in cash when you meet me.

We will leave the meeting place promptly at 9:30am.

We will catch the 9:48am train to St Albans.

After arriving we will make a quick visit to the Museum of St Albans (a museum of local history).

We will then go to see the Alban Pilgrimage.
Alban was the first British Christian martyr 1700 years ago, and pilgrims came in such numbers that it the early Middle Ages St Albans was the premier Abbey in all England.
Today there will be a special procession from 11am-12 noon to commemorate Alban's death (TV cameras will be present).

You can then choose what you want to do from 12-1:30pm - there is a lively market you can visit, there are free folk music performances, you can climb the clock tower, or you can join the special Eucharist service inside the cathedral.

From 1:30-3:00pm we will take a guided walking tour of St Albans with a local guide.
(If you want to join the Eucharist service you might like to bring some sandwiches to eat during the walking tour)

We will then visit Verulamium Park and enter the Verulamium museum (based on the Roman history of St Albans)

Afterwards we will go to the famous Waffle House at the old water mill for a sweet or savoury waffle and tea/coffee. We may finish with a quick drink at Ye Olde Fighting Cocks - reputedly the oldest inn in England.

We plan to arrive back at St Pancras International at some time before 8:30pm.

The £30 cost of this trip includes all transport, the guided tour of St Albans, entry to the Verulamium museum, plus a contribution towards the organiser's costs. You will need to bring some extra money for food or drink or for any optional attractions you wish to visit in St Albans.
