Cambridge Festival of Ideas (day trip)

Let's make a day trip to Cambridge to take part in its annual Festival of Ideas, attending discussions about different topics.

This is not a general sightseeing trip (we will not be visiting the colleges or going punting).

Please meet me at 9:00-9:15am in Kings Cross train station. I will be wearing an orange scarf. The meeting place is in front of the ticket office in the departures section of the station - near a branch of Leon (which is number 5 on the station plan: Plan of Kings Cross station (PDF document)). My mobile phone number is [masked].

Please pay me £20 in cash when you meet me. This covers all transport costs (train/bus) and a contribution to the organiser's costs. You will need extra money for food and drink.

Please bring a sandwich with you for lunch, as food is not available on the sites we are visiting and there may be limited time.

We will be catching this train:
09:45 - Kings Cross
10:30 – Cambridge

Please make sure that you answer the questions when your RSVP, so that I know which options you have chosen.

You must make your own online bookings (print your ticket and bring this with you) for any sessions marked "pre-book" (if places are still available). Book online at:

I have divided the day into three blocks. For each block, choose one of the options (or choose to do something different by yourself). If you have not booked a ticket you will have to choose the options for which no booking is required, or queue up on the day in the hope that places are available.

Personally I have chosen (b), (c) and (e). You can choose free time during any of the sessions if you prefer.

* 11-2pm Morning session
(a) 11:30-1pm: Is Europe in terminal decline? [pre-book]
Excursion to Grantchester [no pre-booking required]

* 2-4pm Afternoon session
(c) 2:30-3:30pm Human sexuality: lessons from online pornography [pre-book]
(d) 3-4pm: Ideas and languages: 10 languages that changed the world [no pre-booking required]

* 4-7:30pm Evening session
(e) 4:30-5:30pm How to make smart decisions in a confusing world [fully booked]
(f) 5-7pm A collective out of body experience? [pre-book]
(g) 5-6:30pm How to be a single woman in 2013 [fully booked]

We will meet together afterwards and have supper before returning back to Kings Cross before 10pm.

    I'd have added a sixth star to the rating of the event if it had been possible!

    Hi I was going to bring a friend but she's unable to join me, so I now have a spare ticket for (c) and (g). Does anyone want them? If not, I'll release them back to the event organiser. Thanks

    Hi Mark, Another great meet up organized by you.
    I am afraid I cannot attend this time around. What a shame! I do have to go to work, no pain no gain! These talks are very interesting, so I am sure it is going to be a good quality day out!
    Wishing everyone a great day in this beautiful city of Cambridge!
    See you next time.

    Now unable to go, sadly, but it looks like a great day out. Well done for organising it. A cut above a lot of Meetup events.

    Hi Mark, I might run late next Saturday as I have to attend a training session till 10am. Wondering If I could drive down with a friend and link-up with the group in Cambridge at about 11am. Cheers
