Very Early Morning Trip to Smithfield Market

Hi, I am looking for partner in crime to go to Smithfield Meat Market for hunting. They close 7.30am so this is for morning risers. I was there once at 6 and it was great, got a bag of maybe 20 chicken breasts for 20 quid. This is for anyone who can take their purchase straight to fridge. Idea is get there, buy in bulk, share.

Thanks everyone for coming, we all needed extra motivation to get up early morning. I agree this is a good idea to stock up on a budget once every few weeks. It was also great to see one of the oldest markets in London at its peak hour with superfriendly traders and jolly butchers in bloody aprons. Event defo to be repeated once we eat all todays supplies!

Too early but well worth the visit. I'd certainly do it again. Definitely beats supermarket prices.

Agree - I can imagine going once every 4 - 6 weeks to stock up (my freezer can only hold so much!). I didn't get any chicken in the end, I bought some wild boar instead...

Not sure why that comment of mine showed up again... Anyway, since I am unlikely to make it tomorrow would someone mind checking if there's any nitrate free bacon at smithfield?! Thanks so much.

Yeah, printed out little market maps and list of potential traders we could go to - the ones that have organic meats mostly. Early bedtime tonight folks!

Hi Ama, I will have a white helmet, a bit like the one that's I'm wearing on the meetup photo :)

Because of my location (Harrow) I might get there a bit later than 6am. Someone wear something distinguishable (like a cow suit or something) so I can recognise you when I get there.

If it's anything like Billingsgate market is for fish then we might need to get there even earlier than 6. We have a "fish share" group and we have to get there around 4 a.m. to make sure restaurants don't buy everything off...

Hans, as promised, here is the catch of the day from our trip to Billingsgate. In total we ended up getting about 3 kg salmon, 2 kg sea bass, 2 kg sea bream, 4 kg haddock and about 5 kg of plaice. This was split between 5 people and came to about £26 each. It was all fillets but if you get whole fish - already clean and gutted but it still has bones and the head - it will be even cheaper (I usually also want mackerel and sardines too but the other people in my group don't like bones so I miss out on that). Hope that helps.

Since you suggested it you should see an option at the top to set the date (where it says needs a date)

Hi Cat, I was there just once, so have no idea what they have exactly. The experience itself of going and looking around would be great for the first time. I'd only check suppliers on the market's website to know where to go for say - organic beef or game - as the market is rather big, there are many aisles.

I was there just once and got a massive bag of chicken breasts. That was pure greed though and in the end i forgot I have them! Bulk buying and sharing is the best idea. Probably nice gents in bloody aprons could help to divide the goods in smaller portions. From the website i gather there is stall with organic meats, game, etc. By 7.30 it's all over so[masked] ish should be ok. Most of the local butchers and restaurants probably buy there. Most of days work for me. I better start clearing the freezer :)

I'm up for it. I'm working out of Innovation Warehouse http://www.innovationwarehouse.... which is just above it. I thought it was catering for commercial buyers, can anyone buy there? and what days?

Definitely interested, depending on what day is chosen (and how much space I have in my freezer... it varies!).

Cannot do Wed or Thurs mornings. Otherwise would love to do this.

I like the idea very much! I might join depending on the day we choose.
