As Elvis put it 'A little less conversation, a little more action please'!
Journalist George Monbiot puts it a bit more eloquently: 'Without public protest, democracy is dead. Every successful challenge to excessive power begins outside the political chamber. When protest stops, politics sclerotises: it becomes a conversation between different factions of the elite.'
This group is for people who want to make their voice heard through peaceful protest/ rallies/ direct actions in London, and want to know exactly what is taking place, when and where.
I want this meetup group to be like a noticeboard for whats going on - protest-wise - in London, as I don't think there is currently a website that performs a similar function (if I'm mistaken and there is such a website please do let me know!).
I've heard many concerned citizens say the same thing, that they want to make their voice heard and want to take part in peaceful protests and the like, but simply don't know how to find out when and where relevant protests are taking place, and subsequently end up missing them, or finding about them once it is to late.
More and more people are becoming aware of the massive problems in the system out there in the world, whether they be on our own doorstep (eg current government spending cuts, or the way in which wealthy elites can control politics through campaign finance) and some more international in nature (eg the US' illegal targeted assasinations/ drone attacks, or Israel's settlement building programme in Palestine).
Every week plenty of new books come out highlighting the problems, every day there seems to be public talks about injustices and corruption, countless articles appear on a daily basis in newspapers talking about atrocities - so there is a lot of talking going on about the problems, but, seemingly, not a lot of action.
So if you know of a peaceful protest or direct action or rally that is taking place in London, whether it is about a human right violation or a social justice issue or something similar, for heavens sake lets get it on here, spread the word, and lets get s*&t done!
Hopefully we can meet up at these rallies and protests. Any event I'm going to, I will post up my contact details, it's always good to meet like-minded comrades, strength in numbers and all that, hopefully over time we can build up quite a network. And it would be good to go for drinks after each event, after all saving the world can be thirsty work!
